A long time ago in western Indonesia, a poor woman and her son Malin Kundang lived together. Malin was a skilled fisherman who supported his mother by catching and selling fish. After Malin became successful and married a wealthy woman, he refused to acknowledge his poor mother when she came to see him. Despite his mother begging him three times, Malin shouted that he never had a poor peasant as a mother. He then ordered his crew to set sail.
