1. Define the components of Emergency Medical Services (EMS)

system.

2. Differentiate the roles and responsibilities of the Emergency

Medical Responder from other out-of-hospital care providers.

3. Define the oversight and discuss the Emergency Medical

Responder’s role in the process.


4. Discuss the medical oversight that may affect the medical

care of an Emergency Medical Responder.

5. Explain the rationale for maintaining a professional

appearance when on duty or when responding to a calls.

Level of EMS Training:

1. Emergency Medical Responder

Medical Director:

#Physician who assumes the ultimate responsibility for

direction and oversight of all patient care aspects of

the EMS system.

Patient - Related Duties

EMR have six (6) main patient-related duties on scene:

-Size-up the scene

-Determine patient’s chief complaint or primary injury

-Lift, move, or reposition patient only when necessary


-Transfer the patient and patient information

-Protect the patient’s privacy and maintain

confidentiality

-Be the patient’s advocate


Traits

To be an EMR, you must be:

-Honest and realistic when helping patients.

-There may be limits to what you can say to a patient or its

loved ones.
-Requires that you control your OWN feelings at the

emergency scene.

-You have to be highly disciplined professional at the

emergency scene.
-You must keep yourself in reasonably good physical

condition.

-Maintaining skill proficiency is important.


Remember and Consider

-The decision to become an Emergency Medical

Responder (EMR) is an important one.

-Give full consideration to all aspects of emergency care

and the training program.
