Overview of Thread Manufacturing Methods

This document discusses 7 different methods for manufacturing threads: 1) thread cutting on a lathe, 2) thread chasing, 3) tapping, 4) thread milling, 5) thread grinding, 6) thread casting, and 7) thread whirling. Thread cutting on a lathe can produce both external and internal threads using a cutting tool. Thread chasing involves manually or automatically cutting threads using hand or machine chasers. Tapping produces internal threads using a tap and cutting action. Thread milling cuts threads using single or multiple form cutters on a rotating workpiece. Thread grinding is similar to milling but uses grinding wheels. Thread rolling forms threads on cylinders using thread rolling dies. Thread whirling is a variant of mill

THREAD MANUFACTURING

PROCESSES

Prepared by:
Dudhat Dhyey
Methods of thread manufacture:

1. Thread cutting on lathe

2. Thread chasing
3. Tapping
4. Thread milling
5. Thread grinding
6. Thread casting
7. Thread whirling
Thread cutting on lathe:
•Can cut both external and internal thread.
•The lead screw and the split nut, which provide
positive motion of the carriage relative to the rotation
of the spindle.
•Thread cutting is a form cutting operation and
accurately shaped tool is used.

Thread chasing
•There are two type of thread chasing:
1) Hand chaser
2) Threading tool chaser
•Hand chaser is worked manually by hand.
•Threading tool chaser has two useful forms as flat type
and circular type.
•This chasers consist cutting teeth for cutting
operation and sizing teeth for finishing operation.

Tapping
•Tapping is a thread cutting process for producing
internal threads.
•Multiple cutting is used like die threading and
cutting may be done manually or on machine.
•Taps are classified as solid taps and collapsible taps.
Thread tapping tool
Thread milling
•Threads produce by milling process.
•By using form cutter (single form cutter or multiple form
cutter).
•threads are manufactured on rotating work-piece.
•In case of single form cutter blank is rotating slowly and
cutter is precisely moved along with the axis of blank.
Thread milling
Thread grinding
•The principle of thread grinding is similar to thread
milling.
•Grinding is done by using specially dressed grinding
wheels.
Types of thread grinding:
1)pass over grinding
2)plunge grinding

Thread rolling
•It is cold forming process used for making external
threads on cylindrical work piece.
•Threads are formed into blank by pressing thread
rolling die against the blank.
•Thread rolling machines:
1)flat die machine
2)cylindrical die machine

Thread whirling
•Thread whirling is a form of the thread milling process
with the exception that the cutters are mounted on the
inside of a cutting ring or cutter holder rather than the
outside of a milling tool.
•Advantages of thread whirling:
1)Deep threads
2)Faster setup
3)Increased productivity
4)Increased tool life
