Understanding Sibling Rivalry Dynamics

Sibling rivalry is considered normal developmentally but can be frustrating for parents to witness. It allows children to learn important life skills around managing disputes from an early age. Moderate levels of sibling rivalry indicate each child can express their own needs. Causes include evolving needs, temperaments, special needs, and role models. Parents should avoid getting overly involved and encourage children to resolve issues themselves when safe. Equal attention and cooperation between siblings can help reduce rivalry.

• Is sibling rivalry healthy?
• What are the causes of sibling rivalry?
• How to handle sibling rivalry?
• Although rivalry between siblings is considered normal,
it can be frustrating and upsetting to watch — and hear
— your kids fight with one another.
• Sibling rivalry allows kids to learn important skills that
will serve them for life as they cope with disputes at an
early age.
• Moderate levels of sibling rivalry are a healthy sign that
each child is able to express his or her needs or wants.
• Evolving needs
• Individual temperaments
• Special needs/sick kids
• Role models
• Don’t get involved.
• Encourage them to resolve the crisis themselves. If you do step
in, try to resolve problems with your kids, not for them.
• Help them to get along better by setting them to cooperate
instead of compete, by encouraging each child’s individual
talents and successes instead of comparing them to each other.
• Avoid favoring a child over another. Spend equal time with
each child to prevent them from feeling that they get unequal
amount of attention, discipline, and responsiveness.
When getting involved, here are some steps to consider:
• Separate kids until they're calm. Sometimes it's best just to give
them space for a little while and not immediately rehash the conflict.
Otherwise, the fight can escalate again. If you want to make this a
learning experience, wait until the emotions have died down.
• Don't put too much focus on figuring out which child is to blame.
It takes two to fight — anyone who is involved is partly responsible.
• Next, try to set up a "win-win" situation so that each child gains
something. When they both want the same toy, perhaps there's a
game they could play together instead.
• Being an only child, like having siblings, can be either
good or bad, depending on how you perceive it and how
you are brought up by your parents.
