Ten Commandments

 The Laws of Love:
Love of God and Love of Neighbor
"Teacher, what good deed must I do, to have
eternal life?” asked the rich young man.

JESUS
“Recognize God as the "One there is who is good,"
as the supreme Good and the source of all good.
Then Jesus tells him:
"If you would enter life, keep the commandments."
We Keep the Commandments as
Proof of our Love for God
How do we love God? Jesus tells us how.

JESUS
"You shall not kill, You shall not commit
adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear
false witness, Honor your father and mother."
Jesus summarizes these commandments :
"You shall love your neighbor as yourself."
 God wants to PERFECT us.

"If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and
give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven;
and come, follow me.” Mt. 19:21

“Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is

perfect.” Mt 5:48

But everybody says, “We’re only human.

No one’s perfect.”
 But everybody says:
“We’re only human.”
“No one’s perfect.”
“Perfection is boring.”

Alone we cannot be perfect, but if we

follow Jesus, He will make us perfect in
love. We need to be perfected by Jesus to
enter heaven.
 Which Commandment is the Greatest?
JESUS
This is the greatest and first commandment.
"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,
and with all your soul, and with all your mind.
And a second is like it:
You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

THE LAWS OF LOVE

“On these two commandments hang all the Law and
the prophets.”
 WE LOVE JESUS IN OTHERS.

WE LOVE OTHERS BECAUSE WE

LOVED GOD FIRST.

WE LOVE GOD BECAUSE HE LOVED

US FIRST.
We cannot love others if we did
not love God first because God
is the source of all real love.
From our love of God springs
true love for our neighbor in
whom we recognize Jesus.
 “Ang importante kay Hesus
ay ang gumawa ka ng mabuti
sa kapwa mo. Yun lang at
makakapunta ka na sa
langit.”
 Christ came to fulfill the Law.

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the
Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish
them but to fulfill them.”
“Whosoever therefore shall break one of these
least commandments, and shall teach men so,
shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven:
but whosoever shall do and teach them, he shall
be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”
Mt 5:17-19
COVENANT = PROMISE/”TIPAN”

I take you to be my husband, for richer or

poorer, in sickness and in health, till
death do us part.
 The Decalogue
• Means “ten words”
• Found in the books of Exodus (Ex 20:1-17) and
Deuteronomy (Deut 5:1-22)
• Commandments written by God Himself,
unlike the other commandments given by
Moses.
• 1ST -3rd = Love of God
• 4th – 10th = Love of Neighbor
Given by God to His people as a way of life after God freed
them from slavery. To stay in this covenant relationship
with God means to keep these commandments.

COVENANT
Belonging to God
makes demands of us.
“Hindi ko kailangan magkumpisal
kasi wala naman akong kasalanan
laban sa 10 utos ng Diyos.”
 Jesus revealed the true meaning
of the 10 Commandments.
• Jesus said our righteousness should exceed that of
the scribes and Pharisees to enter heaven. (Mt 5:20)
• Jesus explained the demands of the Commandments:
"You have heard that it was said to the men of old,
'You shall not kill.' . . . But I say to you that every
one who is angry with his brother shall be liable to
judgment.” (Mt 5:21)
First Commandment

You shall worship the Lord

your God and him only shall
you serve.
 First Commandment
“I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of
the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You
shall have no other gods before [Link] shall not
make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of
anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the
earth beneath, or that is in the water under the
earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve
them.” Exodus 20:2-5

embraces Faith, Hope, and Charity
• Faith: Knowing God is all good, all powerful,
He created us and loves us >> requires us to
have complete faith in Him and accept His
authority
• Hope: Knowing God is almighty and merciful
>> requires us to have complete hope in Him
• Love/Charity: Seeing the love that God
pours out to us, how He blesses us everyday
>> requires us to love Him in return.
 FAITH
We obey God because we have faith
in Him.

 How do we sin against our faith?
• Heresy - denial of some truth which must be
believed (ayaw maniwala sa isang katotohanang
inihayag ng Diyos sa pamamagitan ng
Simbahan; pinipiling maniwala sa maling turo)
• Apostasy - total rejection of the Christian faith
(pangkalahatang pagtakwil sa
pananampalatayang Kristiyano)
• Schism - refusal to submit to the Pope or be in
communion with the members of the Church

HOPE
When God calls us, we
cannot love and obey Him
by our own powers.
We must trust that God
will give us the strength
to love and obey Him.
 HOPE
Trusting in God’s promise that we
will see Him one day and be eternally
happy in Heaven.
 HOPE
The fear of offending God and of His
punishment. (because sin can lead us to Hell
and the eternal loss of our loving God.) This
fear protects us and leads us away from sin.
 How do we sin against our hope?
• Despair – when a person stops hoping that God
will save him or forgive him. To despair means to
not trust in God's goodness and mercy. This is
the sin of Judas.
• Presumption – when a person trusts in his own
strength, thinking that he save himself without
help from God, or he thinks God’s mercy will
forgive Him even if he does not away from His
sinful ways.

CHARITY / LOVE
Knowing the greatness of God’s love for us, it is our duty to
respond by loving Him with all our hearts, minds and souls.
We love God in others. We love others because we loved
God first.
 How do we sin against Charity?
• Indifference of religion – the belief
that religions are the same, equally
true and valid
• Ingratitude - refuses to acknowledge
God’s love and to love God in return
(walang pasasalamat)
 How do we sin against Charity?
• Lukewarmness –neglecting to respond to
God’s love; refusing to act out of charity
towards God and others (walang gana sa mga
bagay tungkol sa Diyos)

• Hatred of God - comes from pride; opposed to

love of God; curses God, sees God as someone
who prevents him/her from doing what he
wants, makes difficult demands, and inflicts
punishments.
 The Greatest Love of All?

Because the greatest love of all is happening to me

I found the greatest love of all inside of me
The greatest love of all is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself it is the greatest love of all.

Virtues of Religion
 Adoration
• To praise and exalt God
• To humble oneself, as Mary in the Magnificat,
confessing with gratitude that God has done
great things for us and holy is His Name.
• To completely submit to God as our God and
King, recognizing our nothingness before Him
• Focusing our eyes and hearts on God
– keeps us from being enslaved by sin
– prevents us from idolizing the world
Eucharistic
Adoration
 My soul magnifies the Lord!
My spirit rejoices in God, my Savior!
 Prayer
• Acts of faith, hope, and charity
• Lifting up the mind toward God in an
expression of our adoration, praise and
thanksgiving, intercession and petition.
• We cannot be obedient to God’s
commandments if we do not pray.
• From praying to God we gain the strength to
take up our cross daily and to follow Jesus.
 Sacrifice
• "The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken
spirit. . . . ”
• Must be a spiritual sacrifice, must be from
the heart and involves love of neighbor
• Christ’s suffering and death on the cross -
the only perfect sacrifice to the Father's love
and for our salvation. By uniting ourselves
with his sacrifice we can make our lives a
sacrifice to God.
 When we offer to Jesus our daily sacrifices, we
carry our own crosses and follow Him. Jesus
leads us to eternal life and happiness in heaven.

 Superstition
• Giving false worship to God
• From a tendency toward magic.
• To attribute powers to prayers or
sacramental signs, apart from the
interior
Amulets / Anting-anting
 Idolatry
• God condemns polytheism (the belief in many gods)
and divinizing what is not God
• God requires that we do not worship or venerate
other divinities than the one true God.
– Only one true God – the Holy Trinity (Father, Son and Holy
Spirit)
• Man commits idolatry whenever he worships/pays
respect to a creature in place of God, whether this be
gods or demons (for example, satanism), power,
pleasure, race, ancestors, the state, money, etc.
 Divination
• Recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the
dead or other practices falsely supposed to
"unveil" the future.
• Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading,
interpretation of omens and lots, the
phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to
mediums
• Seances, tarot cards, ouija board
• They contradict the honor, respect, and loving
fear that we owe to God alone.
 Magic or Sorcery
• Wanting occult powers to use over
others – whether for the sake of
“healing” or causing harm, especially
when they invoke the intervention of
demons – is a grave sin.
 Irreligion
• Tempting God - putting his goodness and
almighty power to the test by word or deed.
• Sacrilege - disrespecting the sacraments,
liturgical actions, persons, things, or places
consecrated to God.
– a grave sin especially when committed
against the Eucharist
• Simony - the buying or selling of spiritual
things.
 SACRILEGE

 Atheism
• Rejects or denies the existence of God; comes
from PRIDE
• Refuses dependence on God
• Forms:
– Atheistic humanism – man is the sole maker
and has supreme control of his own history
– Contemporary atheism - looks for the
liberation of man through economic and social
liberation (eg. Communism)
 Agnosticism
• Many forms. Sometimes does not deny the
existence of God but believes God is
unknowable.
• Agnostic does not search for God because he
does not believe God can be found.
• Spiritual sloth
• Like practical atheism – does not say he is an
atheist but acts like an atheist; does not care
about knowing God.
Second Commandment

You shall not take the name of

the Lord your God in vain.
 The Name of the Lord is Holy
• Man must not abuse His name and keep it
mind with silent and loving adoration.
• Use His name only to bless, adore and
glorify Him.
• 2nd Commandment forbids also the abuse of
the name of Jesus, Mary and the Saints.
• Blasphemy – using words of hatred,
reproach, or defiance; in speaking ill of God;
disrespecting God in one's speech; in
misusing God's name.
 “I tell you that every careless word that people [b]speak,
they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment.
For [c]by your words you will be justified, and [d]by your
words you will be condemned.” Matthew 12:36-37
 Taking the Lord’s Name in Vain
• False Oaths – swearing in the name of God
– Swearing by the name of God invokes God’s
truthfulness. False oaths disrespect the Name
of God who is All Truth.
– You have heard it said 'You shall not swear
falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you
have sworn.' But I say to you, Do not swear at
all. . . . Let what you say be simply 'Yes' or 'No';
anything more than this comes from the evil
one.” Mt 5:33-34
Third Commandment
Remember the sabbath day, to keep
it holy. Six days you shall labor, and
do all your work; but the seventh
day is a sabbath to the Lord your
God; in it you shall not do any work.

 Lord’s Day
• Primary holy day of obligation in the Catholic
Church
• Replaces the OT Sabbath, the 7th day, holy to the
Lord
• Sunday – Lord’s Day, day of the resurrection, a
new life/creation
• Sunday celebration – a moral commandment to
render to God an outward, visible, public, and
regular worship
• Sunday celebration of the Lord's Day and his
Eucharist is at the heart of the Church's life
 Sunday Eucharist
• Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and
summit of all Christian worship.
• Catholics must participate in the
Eucharist on days of obligation, unless
excused for a serious reason (for example,
illness, the care of infants) by the parish
priest.
• Those who deliberately fail to go to Mass
on Sunday commit a mortal sin.
Eucharist, Sign of Communion
• Going to Mass on Sunday, we bear witness that
we belong and are faithful to Christ and to his
Church.
• We show together that we have one faith in God
and we are bound by the Love of God as one
family.
• Together they testify to God's holiness and our
hope of salvation.
• We strengthen one another under the guidance
of the Holy Spirit.
Pagsusuri sa Sarili
 ① “Wala nang ibang Diyos,
maliban sa akin”. (Ex 20:2,3)

 Ako ba'y nagbasa ng mga aklat o nanood ng mga

pelikula o palabas na labag sa aking
pananampalataya?
 Ako ba'y mapamahiin? Naniniwala sa mga hula,
astrolohiya, horoscope, pagbasa ng palad, tarrot
cards, kulam?
 Tinupad ko ba ang aking tungkulin sa Diyos ng may
pagaatubili o sama ng loob?
 ① “Wala nang ibang Diyos,
maliban sa akin”. (Ex 20:2,3)

 Tumanggap ba ako ng Komunyon ng

may kasalanang mabigat o nagkulang
sa paghahanda? Nag-ayuno (fasting) ba
ako ng isang oras bago magkomunyon?
 Nagkaila ba ako ng kasalanang mabigat
sa mga nakaraan kong pagkukumpisal?
 ② “Igalang mo ang ngalan ng
Diyos.” (Ex 20:7)
 Binanggit ko ba ang ngalan ng Diyos ng
walang paggalang, o nagsalita ng
walang paggalang tungkol kina Hesus,
Maria, at iba pang mga santo?
 Ako ba'y nagmura?
 Tinupad ko ba ang mga pangako ko sa
Diyos?
 ③ “Ipangilin mo ang araw ng
Panginoon.” (Ex 20:8)
 Ako ba'y palagiang dumadalo sa Misa tuwing Linggo? Taimtim
ba akong nagdarasal at nakikinig habang nagmimisa?

 Dumating ba ako ng huli sa Misa nang walang sapat na

dahilan, at dahil doon ay hindi ko natupad ang aking
tungkuling magsimba?

 Nakatulong ba ako sa Simbahan sa kaniyang pangangailangan

sa abot ng aking makakaya?
 ③ “Ipangilin mo ang araw ng
Panginoon.” (Ex 20:8)
 Ako ba ay nag-aayuno at nangingilin sa karne sa mga
araw na ipinag-uutos ng Simbahan tulad ng
Miyerkules ng Abo, at Biyernes Santo?

 Ako ba'y nakagawa o nakapag-utos ng paggawa ng

mabigat kung araw ng Linggo o araw ng pangilin, sa
halip na magpahinga at manalangin upang mapalapit
sa Diyos?
