PAVEMENT MAINTENANCE
(PAVEMENT CONDITION INDEX)
•Repeatable rating system – identifying the
pavement condition
•Numerical Index – Ranging from 0 to 100
•0 – failed pavement
•100 – perfect condition
PAVEMENT MAINTENANCE
(PAVEMENT CONDITION INDEX)
•Calculated based on the results of a visual
condition survey
•What is the matter that being surveyed???

HOW TO DETERMINE PCI
Road/Pavement Section
Dividing section into inspection units (sample units)
Number of sample unit to be inspected
Survey procedure
Calculating of PCI
Dividing sample units
• Unsurfaced and asphalt surface roads
(including asphalt over concrete)
– 2500 ± 1000 ft2
• Asphalt surface airfield – 5000 ± 2000 ft
• Concrete and airfields with joint spaced
≤ 25 ft - 20 ± 8 slabs
Note: Not all samples units are required to be the same
size but must fit within guidelines
1 ft2 = 0.09 m2
Determining Sample Unit to be Surveyed
• Depend on the use of the pavement and
project or network level
• Project level – High degree of sampling
n = number of sample that
n must be surveyed
N = total number of sample
units
N
Systematic Random

Total number of sample units in section (N) = 47
Minimum number of units to be surveyed = 13 (Obtain from the curve)
Interval (i) = N/n = 47/13 = 3.6 = 3
Random start (S) = 3
Network level – low degree of sampling
• To obtain meaningful rating with the least
cost
• For maintenance work plans
• Assessing the condition of pavement
• Identifying candidate section that may
warrant detailed project-level inspection
• Based on 2 tables
