What is IMS?
• IMS stands for IP Multimedia Subsystem.
• IMS is a key element of 3G cellular
architecture.
• It is an architectural framework for
delivering ubiquitous access to all services
that internet provides from cellular
networks.
• This is the IMS vision.
IMS Standardization
• IMS is defined both by 3GPP and 3GPP2.
Though they are slightly different.
• 3GPP first defined IMS in Release 4.
• The subsequent releases contains
improvements of IMS.
Why IMS?
• Services provided by internet can be
accessed from cellular UE with the existing
circuit switched (CS) and packet switched
(PS) technology.
• Then why do we need IMS?
• The answer is simple: QoS, charging, and
integration of different services.
Features of IMS
• Peer-to-Peer connections
• Rich service creation environment
• Integrated service model
• Open charging model
• Full IPv6 implementation
Protocols in IMS
• SIP • COPS
• SDP • IPsec
• RTP • SigComp
• DNS • DHCPv6
• GPRS • CPCP
• TLS
• Diameter
• MEGACO
