NETWORK ROLES,

IMPORTANCE OF
NETWORKING
AND STRUCTURAL
NETWORK
ROLES
2
CONNECTORS OR
LIASIONS
• Connectors are people with many direct
connections. They often appear in the middle of
clusters and will have high in- and/or out-
degrees. Their network role can in some contexts
be seen as being due to popularity and in other
contexts due to over dependency.

3
4
Isolates or Lurker
• These are the people with no or just a single
connection. They are also called peripheral
nodes.

5
Influencers OR
GATEKEEPERS
• An influencer is someone that is closely connected
to the remaining network.
The role is closely related to the broker’s role as an
influencer, perhaps through others, can reach even
peripheral people.

6
7
Brokers or
Bridge
• A broker is an employee that ties together
disconnected people. The broker either connects
whole groups of people or isolates to the remaining
social network.

8
9
Coordinator
• Connects people within the same group; moves
information around their group.

10
11
STRUCTURAL
HOLES
12
THE CONCEPT
• A concept from social network research, originally
developed by Ronald Stuart Burt
• Most social structures tend to be characterized by
dense clusters of strong connections, also known as
network closure.

13
THE CONCEPT
• An individual who acts as a mediator between two
or more closely connected groups of people could
gain important comparative advantages.

14
THE CONCEPT
• In particular, the position of a bridge between
distinct groups allows him or her to transfer or
gate keep valuable information from one group to
another.

networking

had a profound impact on the
ways human beings of almost
all ages interact with one
another.

for individuals to gather information
about politics that allows them to live
beyond personal resource constraints,

led doctors to reconsider how to apply
the code of ethics that govern the
doctor–patient relationship and
maintain their professional behavior.

19
ECONOMY:
• The more business people get to know
social media and to learn how many
advantages using social media
channels have for their businesses, the
more viral its use becomes.

20
CONTACTS:
• Establishing relationships with others
can help you enhance your career.
Getting a job is generally a lot easier if
someone knows you and recommends
you.

21
INTEREST

social network community, you can
pick and choose individuals whose
likes and dislikes are similar to yours
and build your network around those
commonalities.
