Understanding Imaginary Numbers Basics

The document discusses imaginary numbers and how they allow taking the square root of negative numbers. It defines i as the square root of -1 and explains that imaginary numbers were introduced in mathematics to solve equations that result in negative numbers under radicals. Examples are provided of simplifying expressions involving square roots of negative numbers using i and the property that i^2 = -1. Students are assigned homework problems involving adding and multiplying imaginary number expressions.

Lesson Objective

Discuss imaginary numbers, and know how to simplify

expressions using imaginary numbers.
Taking the Square Root of Negative
Numbers
Up until this point, you have been told that An imaginary number is abbreviated as “ i “
you cannot take the square root of a and is not a real number. It is actually the
negative number. square root of a real negative number.
The square root of -1 (or any number) does It was introduced in mathematics for the sole
not exist because -1 * -1 = +1 and purpose of taking the square root of
+1 * +1 = +1. Therefore, no two values of the negative numbers.
same sign, multiplied together, can equal
-1.
Sometimes an equation ends with a negative
number on one side of the equals sign and
a variable raised to a power on the other
side. Instead of leaving it that way,
imaginary numbers allow us to take the
equation a step further.
Imaginary Numbers
• So if i is the same as √-1,
• Then by squaring both sides
we can eliminate the radical
on the right side because
they cancel each other out,
and we are left with -1.
Therefore, i ² = -1.
Using Imaginary Numbers
Let’s look at an example: √- Using this process, we can
25 = √25(-1) say that √-x = i√x

Since i ² = -1, then we can For example, √-19 can also

rewrite this as √25 i ² be written as i√19

This is the same as Be sure to keep the i on the

√(5 i)(5 i) and therefore, outside of the radical
our final answer would be: because it does not
represent the same thing
5i otherwise.
Adding and Multiplying with Imaginary
Numbers
Example with Addition Example with Multiplication
√-64 · √-49 =
√-81 + √-100 =
i √64 · i √49 =
i √81 + i √100 =
8i · 7i=
9 i + 10 i =
56 i ² =
19 i
