Example 1.
Solve the equation:
o 𝑥 4 − 5𝑥 2 − 6 = 0
o Let y = 𝑥 2
o Recognise that 𝑥 4 = (𝑥 2 )2
o Therefore the equation becomes 𝑦 2 − 5𝑦 − 6 = 0
Example 1 cont’d
Factorize quadratic equation formed.
𝑦−6 𝑦+1 =0
Solving we get: 𝑦 = 6 𝑂𝑅 𝑦 = −1
Remember we made 𝑦 = 𝑥 2
Therefore 𝑥 2 = 6
𝑥 = ±√6
OR 𝑥 2 = −1
