Composition
• Composition is the actual make up of what is in the frame and creating a
visually appealing image
• Depth (Depth of Field): Determining the scope of focus in a shot (Shallow vs.
Deep)
• Rule of Thirds: Decision on where to place a subject in the frame of a shot (divide
the screen into thirds horizontally and vertically.
• Framing: Choosing what will be in the frame of a shot (Lines, Symmetry, Lead
Room)
Shallow Depth of Field
• Only one subject is in focus in a shot
• This focuses the viewers attention on the
image in focus, creating an importance

• Wider scope is in focus
• This allows viewers in take in the entire
setting or action in the scene

• This is useful to direct the viewer’s

Rule of Thirds
• Again, divide the frame into
thirds horizontally and
vertically to help decide
where to place a subject.
• Rarely, do you want to place Se7en
a subject directly in the
middle
• Usually, you want to shoot
the subject on one of the
imaginary vertical or
horizontal lines, leaving
space in the direction the
subject is looking or

• This is not done often so when it is used
the director is doing it for a purpose
with the main subject in the middle

• Placing a subject in a frame to
leave for the entire person’s head,
or not cutting off a limb with the
frame
• Also, when following the rule of While the City Sleeps
thirds, there will be extra space.
Good Lead room is using that
space effectively in regards to the
subject, such as leaving space in
the direction the person is looking
or walking.
