Overview of Induction Motors

The document discusses induction motors and their construction and working principles. It describes the key components of an induction motor including the stator, rotor, and how power is induced in the rotor via electromagnetic induction from the rotating magnetic field in the stator. It also compares squirrel cage and slip ring induction motors, describing their construction, advantages/disadvantages, and applications. The document outlines various energy conversion techniques and losses present in induction motors.

►As generally we know that Electric motor converts
electrical power
to mechanical power in its rotor (rotating part).

►In DC Motor this power is supplied to the armature directly from a DC

source. Hence in this sense , a DC motor can be called a conduction
motor.
►while in an AC motor this
power is induced in the rotating device. That is
why such motors called An induction motors.

►An Induction motor (IM) is a type of asynchronous AC MOTOR where

power is supplied to the rotating device by means of electromagnectic
induction.
Construction of 3 Phase induction motor
1. It is made of no. of stamping.
2. It consist of slots which winding is fixed & Three
phase motor winding .
3. It consists of 3 phase stator winding is placed in the
slots & it is fed from 3 Phase supply .
4. Stator winding is wound for definate no. of poles .

No. of poles are determined by speed,

Ns=120f/p
1. Almost 90% induction motors are squirrel cage
induction motors , because this type rotor has the
simplest & most rugged construction.
2. The rotor consist consist of a cylindrical laminated
core with parallel slots for caryying rotor conductors
which, it should be noted carefully.
3. It consists of heavy bars of Cu,Al or alloys. One bar
is placed in each slots.
4. This rortor bars are shorted by end rings.
How the Squirrel Cage induction motors
running?

It helps to make run the motor quickely by reducing magnetic hum

It helps in reducing the locking tedency of rotor.
1. Slip induction motor also have laminated
construction for their cores .
2. The stator of this motor has three-phase star or
delta connected winding simillar to the squirrel cage
induction motor.
3. The rotor also carries a similar three-phase star
connected winding.
4. The speed control is easy with the help of the rotor
resistance starter .
But the this motor have complicated construction
because it consist of a 3 phase winding .

1. With poor factor motor draws high current & power
consumed by motor increases.
2. As a result of it motor efficiency decreases but
there is drop in the supply line.
3. For improving p.f., connect the capacitor bank,
which will improve the the p.f. of the system from
installation to generating station.
4. Result in improving in efficiency of the motor &
also M.D. of the system reduce.
