Engineering
Design Process
By Zain Utterback
STEP 1:
The designer outlines what human need or want exists to solve the
problem. Sometimes design problems are not clearly defined which
causes the designer to do research to better define the design
problem.
STEP 2:
Designers generate ideas without considering the limitations of the
design.
STEP 3:
Designers use the ideas generated from step 2 and research them.
During their research, the designer is looking for the following:
Does the solution to this design problem already exist? Can
another solution / product be adapted to solve this design
problem? Is there any mathematical or scientific information related
to this design problem that needs to be collected?
STEP 4:
Designers will identify criteria and specific constraints for their
design so they will know what the focus of the design should be.
Identify the desired elements for your design.
STEP 5:
Designers will consider other solutions to the design problem. Are
there any solutions that are simpler or less expensive than the
solution that is currently being considered?
STEP 6:
Designers choose which solution best meets the criteria and
constraints.
STEP 7:
Develop a design proposal that specifies what the design will look
like and what materials will be needed to make it. This information
can be communicated through: sketches, drawings, models and
written instructions.
STEP 8:
Creating models allows a designer to create a smaller version of
their idea for less time and money. This model could be physical, or
computer-based. A prototype performs exactly as the final design
problem solution - it is used for testing. A mock up looks like the
final design solution, but does not perform like the final solution
would.
STEP 9:
Models and / or prototypes are tested. Does the model and / or
prototype meet the established criteria? Does the model and / or
prototype need to be refined?Test data is collected in this step to
help with Step 10.
STEP 10:
Using the results from Step 9, designers will refine their design
solution’s function, economic value, or ethics.
STEP 11:
The design solution is then produced and sold to customers.
Designers and engineers work together to plan out the design
solution manufacturing process.
STEP 12:
Designers communicate the results of their design solutions to
others so that further advancements can be made if necessary.
This information can be communicated through: portfolios,
journals, drawings, sketches, and schematics.
