Productivity Study in Continuous Processing

The document summarizes a productivity study conducted at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) in a continuous processing industry. The study aimed to analyze current plant operations and identify areas for improving productivity. Researchers conducted a literature review on productivity and work study techniques. They analyzed the material flow process and made suggestions to improve productivity, primarily in material handling. The document outlines the basic methodology used, including selecting a process, recording details, examining for inefficiencies, and defining improvements.

About the Project
This project titled “PRODUCTIVITY STUDY IN A
CONTINUOUS PROCESSING INDUSTRY” was carried
out in BHEL(Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited) at the
Electro-porcelain Division (EPD). The aim of this project
is to analyze the operations of the existing plant and
identifying the areas for productivity improvement. A
proper study was conducted and identified the areas for
improving the productivity. Suggestions were made to
improve the productivity. The suggestions were mainly
given in material flow process.
Literature Survey
Productivity
 The productivity is the ratio of aggregate
output to the aggregate. Its a
relationship between the output and the
input of a business system For survival of
any organization, its productivity should
be very high. So, the objective of the
organization should be to identify ways
and means to improve productivity to the
highest possible level.
Strategies for improving the productivity:

 Increased output for the same input

 Decreased input for the same output
 Proportionate increase in the output is more than the
proportionate increse in the input.
 Proportionate decrease in the input is more than the
proportionate decrease in the output.
 Simultaneous increase in the output with decrease in
the input
Increasing productivity of resources :
Getting more number of output from the same amount of input:

 Material: Industries in which the cost of raw material is a big

percentage of the cost of finished goods ,higher productivity can be
achieved through proper use of materials, i.e. reducing scrap

 Labour: A little change in design of a component parts so as to

facilitate final assembly, can be increase the number of products
assembled per day with the same amount of labour.

 Plant equipment and machinery: Productivity can be increased

through the use of improved tools, simple attachments and other
devices.

 Land and building: A suitable plant layout can accommodate more

machinery in the same place and thus raise productivity. Proper
orientation, construction and inside condition of the building
definitely affect the productivity.
Work Study

It is a systematic and analytical study of work

process and work methods with the objective
of increasing efficiency and reducing costs.
Work study helps to reduce waste through
standardization of qualitative and quantitative
element of job.

all events under review using appropriate
process chart symbols.
