HEC-RAS Channel Hydraulics Guide

HEC-RAS is a hydraulic modeling software used to simulate water flow through natural rivers and other channels. It allows users to input channel geometry, flow data, and boundary conditions to calculate water surface profiles. The key functions of HEC-RAS include tools for entering cross section data, steady flow simulations, and viewing results in the form of graphs, maps, and tables showing water depth, velocity, and other hydraulic parameters at different points in the modeled channel network. HEC-RAS uses hydrologic and hydraulic equations like the energy equation and continuity equation to model one-dimensional flow through river systems.

Within each reach, river station

River station values are not a

measure of distance.

L1
L2

L1 and L2 are not defined as

part of the cross section data.
Steady-Flow Data

Flows are defined at X-

sections.

Flow does not change

between X-sections.

If flow is not specified

at a X-section, then it is
assumed that it does
not change at the X-
section.
Boundary Conditions

Boundary Conditions are specified at:

downstream X-sections for subcritical flow (downstream control)

upstream X-sections for supercritical flow (upstream control)

Plan
A Plan is a unique combination of:

Geometry File (reach network, X-sections and junctions), and

Steady Flow File (flows and boundary conditions).
