Types of Materials: Metals and Alloys

Metals like iron and copper are elements, while carbon and silicon are non-metals. Elements are pure materials, compounds consist of two or more chemically bound elements, and mixtures are a combination of elements or compounds mixed together but not chemically bound. Carbon steels are widely used engineering materials that contain carbon, with mild steel containing 0.3% carbon, medium carbon steel between 0.3-0.6% carbon, and high carbon steel between 0.6-1.4% carbon. Corrosion occurs as iron in steel reacts with oxygen in air to form iron oxide, known as rusting.

corrosion

This reaction takes place between the

iron in the steel and the oxygen in the
air, to form iron oxide. When iron
corrodes , we say that it rusts.
