Conventional vs Non-Conventional Energy

The document discusses conventional and non-conventional sources of energy. [1] Conventional sources include fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas, which form over long periods from decaying organic matter. [2] Thermal power plants are commonly used to burn fossil fuels and generate electricity. [3] Non-conventional sources discussed include solar, wind, tidal and geothermal energy, which have advantages like being renewable but also limitations like variability.

Conventional and Non

Conventional Sources Of Energy

Submitted By-

Reetika Agarwal
Introduction to Conventional
Sources Of Energy
Conventional energy sources
include oil, gas and coal. The pace
and scale of conventional energy
development has increased
dramatically in Canada over the
past decade, particularly in Alberta
due to the booming oil sands
industry. Developing these
resources responsibly requires that
the negative environmental, social
and economic impacts be
minimized.
Features Of Conventional Sources

Traditional energy sources consist primarily

of coal, natural gas and oil. They form from
decaying plant and animal material over
hundreds of thousands to millions of years.
Most of these sources are burned to produce
energy through power plants and
automobiles.
Types Of Conventional Sources

1) Fossil Fuels.
2) Thermal Power Plant.
3) Hydro Power Plant.
4) Bio-Gas Energy.
5) Wing Energy.

Fossil Fuel
Thermal Power Plant

In thermal power plants, fuel is

burnt to produce heat energy
which is converted into electrical
energy. Large amount of fossil
fuels are burnt in power stations to
heat up water to produce steam
which further runs the turbine to
generate electricity.

Bio Gas Plant
Bio Mass:

The waste material of the living things

and dead part of the plant and animal is
called bio-mass.

Bio Gas:

It is a mixture of 75% methane,

Hydrogen sulphide , CO2 & Hydrogen.
Produce by the decomposition of
animal waste like animal dung or plant
waste in the absence of air.
Advantages of Bio Gas

1) Its burns without smoke, therefore

causes less pollution.
2) Its calorific value is high.
3) It is convenient to use and leave no
residue.
Uses of Bio Gas

1) It is used for generating electricity.

2) It is used to run engines and
pumping sets.
3) It is an domestic fuel for cooking as
well as in industries.
Wind Energy

Moving air is called wind. As

the moving objects posses
kinetic energy and as such they
are capable of doing
mechanical by virtue of its
motion. The energy possessed
by the wind is due to its high
speed.
Advantages of Wind Energy

1) It is an environmental-friendly and
efficient sources of renewable energy.
2) It requires no recurring expenses for the
production of electricity.
3) It do not cause pollution.
Non Conventional Energy
The non-conventional sources
of energy such as energy from
sun, wind, biomass, tidal
energy, geothermal energy
and even energy from waste
material are gaining
importance. This energy is
abundant, renewable,
pollution free and Eco-
friendly. It can be more
conveniently supplied to
urban, rural and even remote
areas.
Types Of Non Conventional
Sources Of Energy

1) Solar Energy.
2) Tidal Energy.
3) Wave Energy.
4) Geothermal Energy.
5) Nuclear Energy.
6) Ocean Thermal Energy.
Solar Energy
The sun has been radiating an
enormous amount of energy at
the present rate for nearly five
billion years and will continue
radiating at that rate for about
five billion years more. Only a
small part of solar energy
reaches the outer layer of the
earths atmosphere. Nearly half
of it is absorbed while passing
through the atmosphere and the
rest reaches the earth surface.

Solar Energy
Tidal Energy
Due to attraction of
moon on sea water ,
water surface rise and
falls, thus the waves are
formed , these waves are
called tidal wave . And
energy possessed by

tides known as tidal
energy .
Wave Energyof wind
Due to blowing
on the surface of the
ocean very fast sea
waves are generated
which have a lot of
kinetic energy in them.
This energy, with the
help of various devices
can be used to rotate
the turbine of

Geo Thermal Energy

The heat from interior of the

earth can be utilized as a source
of energy under certain
favorable condition that are
created by natural processes.
This is known as geothermal
energy. It is one of the source of
energy which do not come
directly or indirectly
Nuclear Energy
Energy contained in the
nucleus of atoms is called
nuclear energy. It is released
during nuclear reaction. A
reaction in which composition
of the reacting nuclei changes
to form new elements with a
simultaneous release of large
amount of energy is called a
nuclear reaction.

Conclusion-
Conventional Sources-

Fossil fuels are the major sources of conventional

energies. At present, many countries are overly
dependent on fossil fuels to meet their
requirement for power. The known reserves of
fossil fuels have depleted to a large extent due to
its continued use. If it continues, there is risk of
complete exhaustion of these sources of energy.
Non Conventional Sources

Nuclear energy plants need to

be implemented with proper caution and care.
Any accidental leakage in nuclear power plants
may lead to severe hazardous condition. Will
have to focus on alternative energy sources,
especially renewable energy sources, and make
them more effective.
