Analyzing Horror Film Conventions

The document discusses how the media product uses and challenges conventions of real horror movies. It describes how the opening sequence uses conventions like music, a slow buildup to climax, and setting the scene to introduce the genre. However, it challenges conventions by having a sole female protagonist, going against the typical portrayal of women as damsels in distress. The response explains how aspects like the costume, setting in an isolated forest, and camera equipment match those used in The Blair Witch Project from the same time period. While using these conventions, the protagonist's independent and courageous role aims to challenge common stereotypes of females in horror films.

In what ways does your media product use, develop
or challenge forms and conventions of real media
products?
Ways in which our media product uses, develops or challenges forms and conventions of real media
products is through the use of codes and conventions within our genre being portrayed within
our opening sequence. However, because we used a female as our main protagonist and ONLY
protagonist, we felt we challenged the stereotypical view upon women within horror movies, for
example; women are portrayed to be damsels in distress or are inferior of the situation their in.

Codes and Conventions for Horror

Supernatural:
Conventions we included in our production;
- Music sound effects ad voice overs SETTING set within a isolated location such as
- a large residential building, or dark area such as
Slow build up to a climax ending
forest/woods.
- Set the scene and introduce the genre from
the very start MAIN PROTAGOINST appear normal and will
- Sense of suspense be commonly a female, who also is known to be
the survivor till the end. Usually experience
- Surprise and a constant sense of impelling doom. terror.

COSTUME The main character is likely to be

dressed very casually to portray a level of
normality. However, as the film begins to unfold,
the main character may become very untidy and
disorientated throughout the film e.g. bloody
and dirty clothing, or have injuries (makeup
mise en scene).

LIGHTING & SOUND The use of dark/gloomy

Explain how you developed your sequence
to match that of real movies of the same
genre
When looking at our opening sequence in comparison to the film The Blair Witch Project
we used similar aspects of their conventions and ideas incorporated within our own
sequence. For example;

- The use our PROP (the Panasonic) and of the VHS cam recorder edit with the rough
effect of an old camera within our opening sequence, is similar to the use cam
recorders which were available within that time period.

- -The use our COSTUME for our main character relating to the late time period of late
1990s- early 2000s of plain clothing is similar to the use of costume within The Blair
Witch Project.
-
- The use of our SETTING being located within a isolated area (forest) conveys the idea
of traumatic events will soon occur.

Through the use of these codes and conventions we can understand that within our film
we used many of these conventions to create a level of connection between both our
protagonist and the audience. However, in terms of typical stereotypes of women within
our production, we felt as a group we decided to have our protagonist go against these
stereotypes and play the role of a young adult who is independent and courageous to
complete this investigation all by herself. Within horror movies, women are portrayed to
be the damsel in distress in which they are seen to be problematic and go through the
most traumatic situations at hand. However, de[pending on the sub-genre the female
character can be the leader to the problem or instigator.
