Definition of the Continental
Shelf
Paragraph 1 of Article 76 of the UNCLOS defines the continental
shelf that may be subject to the sovereign rights and
jurisdiction of the coastal State:

>>> The continental shelf of a coastal State


comprises the sea-bed and subsoil of the submarine
areas that extend beyond its territorial sea
throughout the natural prolongation of its land
territory to the outer edge of the continental
margin, or to a distance of 200 nautical miles from
the baselines from which the breadth of the
territorial sea is measured where the outer edge of
the continental margin does not extend up to that
distance.

exploiting, conserving and managing the natural resources,
whether living or non-living

jurisdiction - authority within the defined area of


responsibility with regard to the protection and preservation
of the marine environment, including the adoption and
enforcement of laws and regulations for the prevention,
reduction and control of pollution from vessels conforming to
and giving effect to generally accepted international rules and
standards
