Entropy Transfer in Thermodynamics

Thermodynamics lecture 44 discusses entropy balance in systems. Entropy can be transferred by heat when temperature is not constant, or by mass if there is mass flow. For a closed system with no mass flow, entropy transfer by mass is zero, while an open system or control volume can experience entropy transfer via both heat and mass flow across its boundaries. The entropy balance considers the entropy transfer into and out of the system or control volume.

Entropy Balance of a System

2
Mechanism of Entropy Transfer
1. Entropy Transfer
by Heat:

If T is not Constant,
Then;

An energy interaction that is accompanied by

entropy transfer is heat transfer, and an
energy interaction that is not accompanied by
entropy transfer is work.
2. Entropy Transfer by
Mass:

Closed systems do not involve any mass flow

and thus any entropy transfer by mass is zero
in closed system. 3
