Throttling Devices in Thermodynamics

This document discusses throttling devices, throttling or isenthalpic processes, and pipe and duct flows in thermodynamics. It defines throttling as regulating flow through a valve or restriction, which causes a pressure and temperature drop. During an isenthalpic process for an ideal gas, entropy increases while enthalpy remains constant. The transport of liquids and gases in pipes and ducts is important, and any work interactions from heating, fans, or pumps must be considered. The document lists example and exercise problems from Chapter 5.

Throttling Devices
Throttling means to regulate the flow by means of valve
or any kind of flow restriction.
The result of throttling is a significant pressure drop
accompanied by a drop in temperature. (e.g.,
refrigeration & air conditioning)

3
Pipe and Duct Flows
The transport of liquids or gases in pipes and ducts is of
great importance in many engineering applications.
If the control volume involves a heating section (electric
wires), a fan, or a pump (shaft), the work interactions
should be considered.
