Stratified Charge Engine Overview

Stratified charge engines stratify the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber so that the mixture near the spark plug is richer than the rest of the chamber. This stratification allows for an overall leaner mixture, higher compression ratios, and improved fuel efficiency and emissions compared to conventional spark ignition engines. However, stratified charge engines also have disadvantages like reduced power, higher weight, and increased manufacturing costs.

Stratified Charge Engine

Definition:
Spark ignition Internal combustion engine in which
mixture in zone of spark plug is richer and leaner at rest
of the combustion chamber.
Need
To increase overall fuel economy.
To increase thermal efficiency.
To increase compression ratio.
To decrease heat loss.
Decrease overall emissions.
For ultra lean air-fuel mixtures.
construction
Working
Methods of Stratification
Classifying on the bassis of spacing
Close spacing (spray guided)
Wide spacing (wall and air guided)
Classifying on basis of formation of heterogeneous
mixture.
Stratification by fuel injection and positive ignition.
using carburetor alone.
Stratification by fuel injection and positive ignition:
Ricardos pre-chamber
Disadvantages: thermal efficiency loss due to
throttlingand improper burning at full load conditions.
Advantages
Higher thermal efficiency

Because of higher compression ratio.

in Spark ignition engine - 9:1
in Stratified charge engine - 12:1
in compression engine - 16:1
Reduced air pollution
Nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxides and hydrocarbon.
Dis-advantages
Reduces power.
Higher weight to power ratio.
High manufacturing cost.
High pressure requirements.
