Overview of the Warsaw Pact

NATO was established in 1949 by Belgium, France, Denmark, Great Britain, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal and the U.S. in response to the quick expansion of Communism in Europe following World War II and the Soviet control over countries like Czechoslovakia and growing influence in Poland. The objectives of NATO were to provide mutual military cooperation and defense if any member was attacked, economic support for smaller members, and the defense of democratic liberties and recovery of Europe to contain the expansion of USSR and Communism.
