Affinity Diagram
A tool that gathers large amount of
language data (ideas, opinions,
issues) and organizes them into
groupings based on their natural
relationships.
When to use an Affinity
Diagram:
Through large volume of data
To encourage new patterns of
thinking
Creating the Affinity Diagram
Affinitizing is a process performed by a
group or team.
Unique features of Affinity Diagram:
Affinitize silently
Go for gut reactions
Handle disagreements
Steps in creating an Affinity
Diagram
Step 1 Generate Idea
Step3 - Sort ideas into Related
Groups
Step 4 Create Header Cards
Step 5 Draw the finished Affinity
Diagram
Header
An idea that captures the essential
link among the ideas contained in
a group of cards.
Brainstorming
A group problem-solving technique
that involves the spontaneous
contribution of ideas from all
members of the group
Uses:
Brainstorming brings team members'
diverse experience into play.
It increases the richness of ideas explored.
It helps team members bond, as they solve
problems in a positive, rewarding
environment.
2 ways of brainstorming:
Individual Brainstorming
- Individual brainstorming is most
effective when you need to solve a
simple problem, generate a list of
ideas, or focus on a broad issue.
Group Brainstorming
- Group brainstorming is often
more effective for solving complex
problems.
Steps in Brainstorming:
1. Prepare the group
Set up a comfortable environment.
2. Present the problem
Clearly define the problem that you want to
solve, and lay out any criteria that you must
meet.
3. Guide the discussion
Encourage everyone to contribute and to
develop ideas, including the quietest people,
and discourage anyone from criticizing ideas.
Nominal Group Technique
Nominal group technique (NGT) is a
structured method for group
brainstorming that encourages
contributions from everyone.
When to Use Nominal Group Technique
When some group members are much more vocal
than others.
When some group members think better in silence.
When there is concern about some members not
participating.
When the group does not easily generate
quantities of ideas.
When all or some group members are new to the
team.
When the issue is controversial or there is heated
conflict.
Nominal Group Technique Procedure
1. State the subject of the brainstorming.
2. State the subject of the brainstorming.
3. Each member in turn states aloud one
idea.
4. Discuss each idea in turn.
5. Prioritize the ideas using list reduction.
Flow Charts
A tool that graphically represents the
steps of a process. They are easy-tounderstand diagrams that show how
the steps in a process fit together.
Uses of Flow charts
Estimate time
Identify who you should
involve in any decisions
How to create a flow chart
1. Identify tasks
2. Organize and document tasks
3. Test the flow chart
4. Challenge the flow chart
