Validity
It is the degree to which the test tests what it is
intended to test.
Various questions like What this test tests?, To
what extent it measures the required ability? can
be asked to confirm validity.
Validity
refers
to
the
appropriateness
of
interpretations of test results for a particular use.
A test can reliable without being valid but the
converse is not true.
An unreliable test will not show high degree of
validity.
Validity
Validity is related to purpose while reliability is
related to stability of the test. So a test may
be valid for one purpose but invalid for
another purpose. But at the same time the
test will be reliable if it is consistent in its
results.
Validity has various kinds which are being
discussed in next slide.
Kinds of Validity
Content Validity
How well the content is covered in the test.
It is important in achievement and proficiency
tests.
It is sometimes called face validity.
Concurrent Validity
How well test scores correspond to already
accepted measures of performance or status
made at the same time.
Kinds of Validity
Predictive Validity
How well the predictions made by the test are
confirmed by evidence at some subsequent time.
It is similar to concurrent validity except that the
evidence on the criterion measures is collected
later.
Construct Validity
It is evaluated by investigating what psychological
qualities a test measures.
It is used when other three types of validity are
insufficient to indicate what test measures.
Kinds of Validity
This type of validity is usually involved in such
tests as of study habits, appreciations,
understandings and interpretation of data.
Nature of Validity
Validity refers to the appropriateness of the
interpretation of the results of test or evaluation
instrument and not an instrument itself.
Validity is a mater of degree.
Validity is always specific to some particular
use. NO test is valid for all purposes.
Validity is viewed as a unitary concept based on
various kinds of evidence. The basic are
content, criterion related and construct. Various
other factors may tend to make the test invalid.
Adequacy
It is the degree to which a test samples
sufficiently widely into the subject that the
resulting scores are representative of relative
total performance in the areas measured.
Careful test taker never assumes that test
measures all the required skills.
A best test is a sample of certain portions of
the total behavior which the examiner
considers vital to pupil mastery in the field.
