Total Distance of Bouncing Ball Calculation

The document is a math word problem about calculating the total distance traveled by a bouncing ball dropped from a rooftop. It provides the information that the ball rebounds to half the height it drops. The ball is initially dropped from 18m above the ground. Through calculating each bounce as half the previous height, the total distance by the third bounce is 45m.

and demonstrate mathematical understanding. The student is expected to:

(A) apply mathematics to problems arising in everyday life, society, and the workplace;
(B) use a problem-solving model that incorporates analyzing given information,
formulating a plan or strategy, determining a solution, justifying the solution, and
evaluating the problem-solving process and the reasonableness of the solution;
(C) select tools, including real objects, manipulatives, paper and pencil, and technology
as appropriate, and techniques, including mental math, estimation, and number sense
as appropriate, to solve problems;
(D) communicate mathematical ideas, reasoning, and their implications using multiple
representations, including symbols, diagrams, graphs, and language as appropriate

Problem

A rubber ball rebounds to half the height it drops. If the ball is

dropped from a rooftop 18 m above the ground, what is the total
distance traveled by the time it hits the ground the third time?

a. 31.5 m

b. 40.5 m

c. 45 m

d. 63 m

The ball is dropped from a rooftop at 18 m above the

ground.

18 m

We have 18 We have a total of 18 balls if

we group them in half we have a total of
9 balls.

The ball bounced back up 9 m.

9m

The ball is being dropped at 4.5 m above ground.

4.5

Now the ball went up 4.5 m that means it

has to come down the same distance. Now
you would add all the meters together to
get your answer.

18 m down + 9 m up + 4.5 m up = 45m
