Peer preference plays a minimal role in beer choice among IHTM students, with only 2% of respondents citing it as a factor. This suggests that personal preferences, such as taste and alcohol content, are more influential .
The most preferred beer among IHTM students is San Mig Apple, with 30% of the total respondents choosing it. This preference is significantly higher among females, with 52% indicating a preference for San Mig Apple compared to 11% of males .
The primary reason for drinking beer is to unwind, cited by 26% of students overall. Celebrating or enjoyment is the next most common reason at 24%. Males are more likely to drink to unwind (30%) compared to females (22%), while females drink more for celebration and enjoyment (30%) compared to males (19%).
One-way and two-way Chi-square tests were employed to test hypotheses about beer preference. The null hypothesis that the observed frequencies do not conform to expected frequencies was accepted, indicating no significant difference. Similarly, the null hypothesis stating gender is not related to beer preferences was also accepted .
The main reason IHTM students choose beer is taste, with 42% citing it as the primary factor. This preference is slightly more pronounced in females (48%) than males (37%). Another significant factor is alcohol content, chosen by 32% of students, with a higher preference among males (33%) compared to females (30%).
A majority of IHTM students, 66%, prefer drinking beer straight from the bottle, with males predominating at 74% compared to 57% of females. This preference might relate to convenience or tradition. Drinking beer in a glass is more common among females, possibly for reasons of etiquette or ease of drinking .
Students who drink beer to unwind or celebrate typically consume 2-3 bottles per sitting, as this aligns with the majority consumption level. In contrast, those driven by stronger motivations like stress relief may consume higher quantities, although such correlations were not directly measured in the study .
The least cited reasons for drinking beer among IHTM students include dealing with breakups, depression, and relaxation, each constituting a minority. Marketing strategies could leverage more prevalent motivations like unwinding and celebrating to target these students effectively .
