when the beautiful game can turn ugly and
the referee can turn into the villain of the
game in space of just one decision.

football ground. usually on the players and the managers and
what they go through every week. How ever
one individual that always manages to find
himself under scrutiny every week, is the
referee.

professional and grass roots. all over the country officiating football
games. However most of them have to
endure 90 minutes of severe abuse from
players, coaches and fans alike.

Archive footage of captains talking to the Voice Over: At the start of the 2008/2009
referees during a game premiership, the FA introduced the respect
the referee campaign. The idea of the
campaign was to clamp down on abusive
behaviour towards referees from mainly the
players. The main rule of this being that only
the captain of each team is allowed to
discuss decisions with the referee.

try out the idea, which happened to before
the campaign even started, I spoke to Barnet
Manager Ian Hendon to talk about the
impact that decision had on the start of the
campaign.

referee may be forgiven for missing
something during a game or making a
mistake, but do the fans feel any sympathy
for them?

have a positive effect on the game. However
it is evident that there is still a lot of work to
be done to ensure that referees are fully
respected within the game.
