History and Applications of Infrared Rays

Infrared is an invisible form of radiation that humans cannot see but can feel as heat. It is part of the electromagnetic spectrum between radio waves and visible light. Sir William Herschel discovered infrared in 1800. Infrared has many uses including night vision devices for the military, thermography in medicine, detecting objects in space for astronomy, and transmitting data for remote controls and other devices using infrared LEDs. Infrared has advantages like low power requirements, costs, and resistance to interference, but disadvantages include short range and requiring direct line of sight without obstacles.

What is Infrared (IR)
An invisible radiant energy that human eyes cannot see, but can be detected by our
bodies as heat.
It is a part of the electromagnetic spectrum that includes radio waves, X-Ray and visible
light also this form of energy have a specific frequency.

History of Infrared
The name infrared comes from the Latin word infra, meaning below. Red is the color of
the longest wavelengths of visible light. Infrared light has a longer wavelength than that of
red light. A longer wavelength means it has a lower frequency than red, hence "below".
Sir William Herschel, an amateur astronomer famous for the discovery of Uranus in 1781,
discovered infrared in the early 19th century. Herschel published his results in 1800 before
the Royal Society of London, IrDA (Infrared Data Association) was formed in 1993 and 60
companies met to establish standards for exchanging data between mobile devices.

Usability of Infrared
Infrared is used in industrial, scientific, military, medical application and many more.
For example :
o Military
- Night Vision device using active near-infrared illumination allow people or animals to be
observed without the observer being detected.

Continue
o Medical
- Uses thermography to detect problems associated with gynecology, kidney
transplantation, dermatology, heart, neonatal physiology, fever screening and brain
imaging.

Continue
o Astronomy
- Uses sensor-equipped telescopes to penetrate dusty regions of space, such as molecular
clouds and detect objects such as planets.

Continue.
o Communication
- Remote controls and IrDA devices use infrared light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to emit infrared
radiation that is focused by a plastic lens into a narrow beam and the beam modulate to
encode the data.

Infrared Advantages
Low power requirement
Low circuitry costs
Not affected by radio transmission
Higher security
High noise immunity

Infrared Disadvantages
Short range
Must have direct Line of sight
High intensity or fluorescent light cause interference
