Data Center Tier Classification Overview

The Uptime Institute introduced a data center tier classification system of I, II, III and IV to represent levels of availability, reliability, and security, with Tier IV being the highest level. Large companies contract with the Uptime Institute to become certified at a particular tier, which guarantees certain uptime percentages and defines levels of redundancy for power and cooling infrastructure. The higher the tier, the higher the guaranteed uptime and the more fully redundant the power and cooling systems.
