Direct vs. Indirect Democracy Explained

Direct democracy is a form of democracy where citizens vote directly on policy initiatives. Indirect democracy is a system where citizens vote for representatives who then govern on their behalf. While direct democracy empowers citizens and holds politicians accountable, it is not practical for most modern nations due to their large sizes and complex issues. Therefore, most countries today utilize a system of indirect democracy through elected representatives, though some direct democratic elements like referendums are still used. The most suitable system may incorporate aspects of both direct and indirect democracy.
