Cost and Management Accounting Relations

Cost accounting and management accounting are related but distinct fields. Cost accounting estimates costs and helps management control costs, while management accounting provides information to assist managers in planning and decision making. Both fields use accounting techniques and cost data, but management accounting has a broader scope that includes financial planning, budgets, and qualitative information to support management. Key differences are that cost accounting focuses on recording past and present costs by product or unit, while management accounting helps project future figures and develop plans and policies.
