Authentication in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

This document summarizes a dissertation on authentication schemes for mobile ad-hoc networks. It introduces mobile ad-hoc networks and discusses why they are used, types of MANETs, common network architectures, and security challenges like availability, confidentiality and integrity. It then describes several authentication techniques for MANETs including certificate-based schemes, distributed key management, artificial intelligence-based approaches, and cluster-based authentication. Finally, it lists some applications of MANETs in areas like personal networking, military operations, emergency response, and civilian environments.

Introduction
Ad hoc networks are a new wireless networking paradigm for mobile hosts. Unlike traditional mobile wireless networks, ad hoc networks do not rely on any fixed infrastructure. Instead, hosts rely on each other to keep the network connected. A Mobile Ad Hoc Network(MANET) is a network consisting of a collection of nodes capable of communicating with each other without help from a network infrastructure. Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) represent complex distributed systems that comprise wireless mobile nodes that can freely and dynamically self-organize into arbitrary and temporary, ad-hoc network topologies. A Mobile Ad Hoc Network(MANET) is a self-organizing , infrastructure less, multi-hop network.

Why Ad Hoc Networks ?

Setting up of fixed access points and backbone infrastructure is not always viable Infrastructure may not be present in a disaster area or war zone Infrastructure may not be practical for shortrange radios; Bluetooth (range ~ 10m) Ad hoc networks: Do not need backbone infrastructure support Are easy to deploy Useful when infrastructure is absent, destroyed or impractical

Types of MANET

Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) :

used for communication among vehicles and between vehicles and roadside equipment.

Intelligent vehicular ad hoc networks (InVANETs)

a kind of artificial intelligence that helps vehicles to behave in intelligent manners during vehicle-tovehicle collisions, accidents, drunken driving etc.

Internet Based Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (iMANET)

In this, entire ad-hoc network can be attached via one router to the Internet and the router must have a wireless link to the Internet.

Architecture of MANET

Classification of Attacks on MANETs Based on OSI Model

Application Layer: Malicious code, Repudiation Transport Layer: Session hijacking, Flooding Network Layer: Sybil, Flooding, Black Hole, Grey Hole. Worm Hole, Link Spoofing, Link Withholding, Location disclosure etc. Data Link/MAC: Malicious Behavior, Selfish Behavior, Active, Passive, Internal External Physical: Interference, Traffic Jamming,

Security Challenges in MANET

The nature of MANET makes it vulnerable to attacks. Challenges in MANET Securities are discussed briefly. 1. Availability:

Availability of necessary and correct data.

2 . Confidentiality: should safeguard certain information which is not to be disclosed to unauthorized entities. 3. Integrity: Transmitted Message should be genuine and should never be corrupted. 4. Authentication: Protection against unauthorized access. 5. Non-repudiation

safeguards that the source of a data should not reject having sent the data.

Each node maintains two certificate repositories, which incurs a high overhead The generation and distribution of keys using complex polynomial functions is resource-intensive and time consuming.
