FOOD

PROCESSING
Processed Foods
are foods that have
been altered in some
way or the other to
make them healthier,
taste better, or for
storage purposes.
Advantages of Processed Foods
 Processed foods like different jams and
juices taste delicious and last longer,
making them a part of every household.
 When stored in cans, processed fruits,
vegetables, and herbs are free from
bacteria and other harmful agents.
 They are easy to purchase because they
are available in all seasons
Advantages of Processed Foods
 Toxin removal, preservation, easy
marketing and distribution tasks, and
increasing food consistency.
 Processed foods are usually less
susceptible to early spoilage than fresh
foods and are better suited for long-
distance transportation from the source to
the consumer.
Advantages of Processed Foods
 Processing can also reduce the incidence
of food-borne diseases.
 The act of processing can often improve
the taste of food significantly.
Disadvantages of Processed Foods
 Some processed foods are genetically
modified, which may harm your health.
 Foods tend to lose their nutritional value
when processed.
 Foods containing added sugar and fat can
lead to many health problems like
diabetes, heart diseases, and other
cardiovascular problems
Disadvantages of Processed Foods
 Food processing can affect its nutritional
density.
 Using food additives represents another
safety concern.
 Food processing inherently introduces
many contamination risks.
Now, what have you
realized about
processed foods? Are
they healthy to eat
regularly? Why or
why not?

Health Risks of Heavily Processed Foods

Increased cancer risk. A five-year

study of over 100,000 people
found that every
10 percent increase in consumptio
n
of ultra-processed food was
associated with a 12 percent
higher risk for cancer.
Health Risks of Heavily Processed Foods

 Too much sugar, sodium, and fat. Heavily

processed foods often contain unhealthy
added sugar, sodium, and fat levels.
These ingredients make the food we eat
taste better, but too much leads to serious
health issues like obesity, heart disease,
high blood pressure, and diabetes
Health Risks of Heavily Processed Foods

Lacking in nutritional value. Heavy

processing strips many foods of their
basic nutrients, which is why many
foods today are fortified with fiber,
vitamins, and minerals.
Health Risks of Heavily Processed Foods

 A calorie is dense and addicting. It's very easy

to overindulge in unhealthy food and consume
more calories than we realize. For example, an
Oreo cookie contains about 50 calories, while
an entire cup of green beans is only 44 calories.
Processed foods like these are also designed to
stimulate our brain’s “feel-good” dopamine
center, making us crave more of them in the
future.
Health Risks of Heavily Processed Foods

 Quicker to digest. Processed foods are easier to

digest than unprocessed, whole foods. That
means our bodies burn less energy (hint:
calories) digesting them. It's estimated we burn
half the calories digesting processed foods
compared to unprocessed foods. This fact,
combined with the calorie density of processed
foods, can make it easy to pack on pounds.
Health Risks of Heavily Processed Foods

 Full of artificial ingredients. There are about

5,000 substances that get added to our food.
Most of them have never been tested by
anyone other than the company. That
includes additives to change color, texture,
flavor, and odor and ingredients like
preservatives and sweeteners.

1. Canning
-food is packed in airtight bags
and bottles in a vacuum area.
-the canning process involves
placing foods in jars or similar
containers and heating them to
a temperature that destroys
microorganisms that cause food
to spoil.
2. Pickling
-is preserving edible
products in an acid
solution, usually vinegar,
or in salt solution (brine).
3. Smoking
-is a process of heat and
chemical treatment of
food to help preserve it
by exposing it to smoke
from burning material
such as wood.
4. Dehydration
-in food processing
means many types of
food can be preserved for
indefinite periods by
extracting the moisture,
thereby inhibiting the
growth of
microorganisms.
5. Salting
-used in food processing
as it sucks out the
moisture from the food. It
is done through the
process of osmosis.
6. Sugaring
-When sugar is added to
foods, it binds to the
water in the foods
reducing the amount of
water available for the
growth of
microorganisms.
7. Pasteurization
-is the process by which
food products (such as
juice and dairy products)
are mildly heated to kill
off harmful bacteria,
salmonella, and other
disease-causing
pathogens.
8. Fermentation
-is the conversion of
carbohydrates to alcohols
and carbon dioxide or
organic acids using
yeasts, bacteria, or a
combination thereof,
under anaerobic
conditions.
9. Irradiation
-is a technology that
improves the safety and
extends the shelf life of
foods by reducing or
eliminating
microorganisms and
insects
