Translations Reflections
vision & strategy on a Coordinate Plane
Introduction 2
This presentation covers the key concepts of translations
and reflections in coordinate geometry. It will explore how
shapes move or flip on the coordinate plane while
maintaining their size and shape. Through specific
examples, we demonstrate the application of
transformation rules and how to identify new coordinates
after each step.

Transformations
Overview
A translation moves a figure from one location to another without 4
rotating or resizing it. Each point of the shape shifts the same
distance in the same direction. Translation rules typically involve
adding or subtracting values to the x and y coordinates,
represented as (x, y) → (x ± a, y ± b). This preserves the figure’s
shape and orientation.
Definition of Translations
Definition of Reflections
Reflections flip a figure over a specified axis,
creating a mirror image. The shape’s size
and form remain unchanged, but its
orientation is reversed. Common reflection
rules include reflecting across the x-axis or
y-axis, expressed as (x, y) → (x, −y) or (x, y)
→ (−x, y). The axis acts as a line of
symmetry for the transformation.
Importance in Coordinate Geometry
Transformations are essential tools in coordinate geometry that help visualize and understand how
shapes move or change orientation. They preserve key properties like size and shape, allowing for
precise modeling and problem-solving. Mastery of transformations enhances spatial reasoning and
forms the foundation for more advanced geometry concepts and applications in various fields such as
engineering and computer graphics.

Project
Breakdown
Original Figure and Coordinates 8
The project begins with plotting the original quadrilateral
ABCD on a coordinate plane. The points are A(1,1), B(5,1),
C(4,3), and D(1,3). This figure serves as the baseline for
all transformations, clearly labeled and connected in
order. The original shape’s position and coordinates are
critical for comparing subsequent translations and
reflections.
Three translations are applied to the figure: 9
- T1 translates right 4 units, rule: (x, y) → (x + 4, y)
- T2 translates up 2 units, rule: (x, y) → (x, y + 2)
- T3 translates left 3 units, rule: (x, y) → (x − 3, y)
Each step shifts all points consistently without altering shape size or
orientation.
Translation Steps with
Rules
Reflection Steps with Rules
Two reflections further transform the figure:
- R1 reflects across the y-axis, rule: (x, y) → (−x, y)
- R2 reflects across the x-axis, rule: (x, y) → (x, −y)
These steps flip the figure over the respective axes, creating mirror images while preserving size and
shape. Each reflection includes updated coordinates for clarity.
This project demonstrates how translations and reflections alter a 11
figure’s position and orientation on the coordinate plane without
changing its size or shape. By applying and documenting five
transformations with clear rules and coordinates, the process
highlights fundamental concepts in geometry and enhances
understanding of spatial relationships and symmetry.
