OBJECTIVES
equations in one variable.
A VARIETY OF PROBLEMS
Now that we know how to solve linear equations in one
variable, let us try applying what we learned in real-life
problems. In this lesson, we shall tackle problems involving
unknown numbers, sums of quantities, supplementary
and complementary angles, consecutive integers,
perimeters, proportions, rates, mixtures, simple interest
and denominations of money, distance, rate, and time.
Whew! We can also actually apply linear equations in one
variable in converting a non-terminating but repeating
decimal to a fraction, and you will discover the method
when you answer the Mastery Drills.

Step 1: Read the problem carefully. Make sure you understand all the words
and ideas. You may need to read the problem two or more times. If
there are words you don’t understand, look them up in a dictionary
or on the Internet. Identify what you are looking for. It’s hard to find
something if you are not sure what it is! Read the problem again and
look for words that tell you what you are looking for! Name what you
are looking for. Choose a variable to represent that quantity. You can
use any letter for the variable, but it may help to choose one that
helps you remember what it represents.

Step 4: Solve the equation using good algebra techniques. Even if you
know the answer right away, using algebra will better prepare
you to solve problems that do not have obvious answers.
Step 5: 9 9
Step 6:
Answer the question with a complete sentence.
MATH 7 STUDY GUIDE

Solution:
Step 1: Represent the unknown number by x. Let x be the number.
Step 2: There are no other unknown numbers to find.
Step 3. Translate into equation. 5(x + 2) = 150
Step 4. Solve the equation.
Use Distributive Property (DP) 5x + 10 = 150
Use APE (Subtract 10) 5x + 10 - 10 = 150 - 10
Subtract 5x = 140
Use MPE (Divide by 5) 5x/5 = 140/5
Divide x = 28
Step 5. Check the answer.
Is the product of 5, and 28 increased by 2, 150?

Step 3: Translate into equation. The number of mL of pure alcohol in the 40% solution
added to the number of mL of pure alcohol in the 70% solution will equal the number
of mL of pure alcohol in the resulting mixture (60% ethyl alcohol)
Thus, 0.40x + 0.70(300) = 0.60(300 + x)
Step 4: Solve the equation.
Multiply by 100 to clear decimals. 40x + 70(300) = 60(300 + x)
Simplify and use DP 40x + 21000 = 18000 + 60x
Use APE (Subtract 21000) 40x + 21000 - 21000 = 8000 - 21000 + 60x
Subtract 40x = -3000 + 60x
Use APE (Subtract 60x) 40x - 60x = -3000 + 60x - 60x
Subtract -20x = -3000
Use MPE (Divide by -20) (-20x)/(-20)=(-3000)/(-20)
Divide x = 150

Step 3: Translate into equation. The interest earned from the mutual fund (12%
interest rate per year) plus the interest earned from the time deposit (5% interest rate
per year) equals the desired total interest of ₱45,000 earned in a year.
Thus, 0.12x + 0.05(x + 50,000) = 45,000
Step 4: Solve the equation.
Multiply by 100 to clear decimals 12x + 5(x + 50,000) = 4,500,000
Use DP 12x + 5x + 250,000 = 4,500,000
Combine like terms 17x + 250,000 = 4,500,000
Use APE (Subtract 250000) 17x + 250,000 - 250,000 =
4,500,000 - 250,000
Subtract 17x = 4,250,000
Use MPE (Divide by 17) 17x/17 = 4,250,000/17
Divide x = 250,000
Solve for the other amount x + 50,000 = 300,000
Step 5: Check the answer. Will 12% of ₱250,000 plus 5% of ₱300,000 earn Maron a
total interest of ₱45,000 every year? Yes, because 250,00(0.12) + 300,000(0.05) =
45,000 or 30,000 + 15,000 = 45,000.
Step 6: Answer the question. Maron should invest ₱250,000 at 12% interest rate
and ₱300,000 at 5% interest rate for him to earn a total of ₱45,000 in interest
per year.

Example 10: Two ambulances leave Naga City, at the same time
and travel to Manila on the expressway. One travels at a constant
speed of 60 kilometers per hour and the other travels at a constant
speed of 80 kilometers per hour. In how many hours will the
distance between them be 30 kilometers?
Solution:
Step 1: Represent the time (in hours) when the distance between them is 30 km by x.
Let x be the number of hours until the distance between them is 30 km.
Step 2: There are no other unknown quantities. It is recommended to use charts to
organize the information in this “distance-rate-time” problem:
9
Step 3: Translate into equation. The difference between the two ambulances after x
hours is 30 km. Thus, 80x - 60x = 30
