AVP 2 – “Home” Compression & Multiband Reflection
Experiment 1 – Multiband Compression on a Track
Track used:
Bass
What problem were you hearing before using multiband compression?
Too much sub in the bass
Which frequency area were you mainly controlling?
Low Mid High Multiple
Low
What improved after using multiband compression?
Dynamic response of low frequencies
Experiment 2 – Regular Compression on a Bus
Bus used:
Drum bus
What was your goal with regular compression on this bus?
(Examples: glue, consistency, control, punch)
Add more punch to all drums/transients
How did the bus feel different after compression?
It felt tighter
Experiment 3 – Multiband Compression on a Bus or Stereo Out
Where did you use multiband compression?
Bus Stereo Out (Master Channel)
Drum Bus
What frequency area were you mainly controlling?
Primarily lows and low mids
Why did multiband compression make more sense here than regular compression?
Because we only wanted to control the low end aspects of the bus (kick, snare fundamental)
rather than compress everything equally
Final Reflection
In your own words, explain the difference between:
Regular compression:
Compression that’s applied across the entire frequency spectrum, affecting everything passing
through it equally
Multiband compression:
Compression that divides the frequency spectrum into multiple bands, allowing each band to
operate indepent of each other with their own threshold, attack, release, etc.
