Dry field of operation. This is because all elastic impression materials, except
hydrocolloids, are hydrophobic. i.e., they don't displace moisture; therefore, any
moisture if present will result in voids or folds within the final impression.

The most common form of disinfection is spraying or immersion in disinfectants

like 1% sodium hypochlorite or 2% potentiated glutaraldehyde solutions and
iodophor.

In direct technique we dose not need an impression phase but we need …

+ we use a reinforcement material to support them

How we could obtain reinforement for post core impressions in indirect

technique ?
By use of a Plastic post (impression post )or stainless steel wire
This will support the impression material and prevents its tearing or distortion
during removal of the impression.

Putty-wash technique was developed for condensation silicones to minimize

the effects of dimensional changes during polymerization.
Most of the shrinkage during polymerization takes place in the putty material
when the preliminary impression is made

In putty - wash technique spacer

made of polyethylene is placed over the heavy body
Why in simple technique we use the medium body consistency of polyether
or addition silicone impression materials) ?
This is because both materials are pseudoplastic materials and have the
capacity for shear thinning.
Pseudoplastic materials demonstrate a decreased viscosity when
subjected to high shear rates such as occurs during mixing and syringing

the single-step technique using only one material (monophase

technique),

Aer completing the preparation of the occlusal and axial surfaces,

smoothening of all surfaces is done ..?
to remove sharp line and point angles because …?
they act as stress concentration areas.

A seating groove is finally placed in the buccal surface of the lower

molar and the palatal surface of the upper molar.

• The type of finishing line recommended for full metal crown is

chamfer finishing line; therefore, a round end tapered fissure bur is
used in the preparation.

If the preparation is done without these grooves, under and over-

preparation is possible, and more time will be spent by repeated
checking of the preparation.

Radial shoulder is a modification of the shoulder finishing line. It is

a shoulder finishing line with rounded internal line angles.

Shoulder finishing line the least conservative type of finishing line

due to the excessive amount of tooth structure removed
porcelain or acrylic resin, which are brittle materials and
require enough thickness to withstand the occlusal forces without
fracture.

the increased thickness provides a better shade of

the material and so better esthetics.

any inlay, onlay and overlay which are braced by pins are
called pinlays.

• These pins may be inserted at the edges of the

teeth or parallel to the grooves.

It is important that the base of the pin-ledge should lie in tooth

surface that is free of damage.

Rotary instruments are used to reduce the height and contour of

the tooth.

The axial surfaces are the facial (labial or buccal), proximal

(mesial and distal), and
palatal (lingual).

The tooth that gives support to the bridge is called “Abutment

tooth or Pier ".

(because of the possibility of pulp exposure during
preparation).
2. Intact buccal wall?
where a more conservative retainer can be
used.

In PFM preparation 2 mm should be removed from the incisal

edge ?
to allow for adequate translucency of the restoration.

In PFM preparation
the tooth labially, it should be
reduced in two planes ?
corresponding to the two geometric planes of the labial surface:
• a gingival plane and , parallel to the long axis of the tooth
an incisal plane parallel to the inclination of this area

In bonded ceramic restoration

They do not require features such as increased axial wall length,
grooves,
or boxes solely for the purpose of retaining the restoration. Why…?
• Retention and resistance are accomplished through the bonding
process and rely much less on mechanical retention.
The materials that can be etched with hydrofluoric acid
and bonded with resin cements

Feldspathic Porcelain Restorations

These veneers can be fabricated to a minimum thickness of
(0.5 mm)

Tooth preparation for all-ceramic restorations should provide

a minimum overall reduction of 1.0 mm to allow for a
minimum thickness of core material. However,
• 1.5 mm on the nonfunctional and 1.5 to 2.0 mm on the
functional cusps are preferred. All line and point angles
should be rounded

The finish line is a radial shoulder that is 1.0 mm wide on the

facial and 0.5 to 0.7 mm wide in other areas.

Recently, anatomical zirconia was introduced. ً ‫احدث مادة حاليا‬

The same principles of full metal crown preparation are used

withPFM exception of providing a deep reduction in the area that
is to be covered with both metal and porcelain

Reinforce the margin of the restoration at this area.

Post crown. ً ‫التعريف مهم جدا‬

• It is a fixed artificial cast restoration that replaces the coronal
portion of the natural tooth completely; retains itself by a mean
of post (dowel) that is extended and cemented into the root
canal space of endodontically treated tooth
The root of post crown should have proper alignment ، why …?
because any abnormality in the alignment of the root in relation to
the adjacent teeth make the construction of post crown difficult.
