Matlab Assignment Questions

The document outlines assignments for an Industrial Simulation course at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, focusing on MATLAB problems. It includes simulations for a bank service system, inventory management, reliability issues, and a newspaper seller's problem, with specific objectives and data tables provided for analysis. Students are tasked with calculating various metrics such as average waiting times, probabilities, and inventory levels over specified periods.

Assignment Problems on MATLAB

1. A bank has two service counters. Customers arrive at the bank at intervals of 3 to 8 minutes,
with probabilities given in Table 1.1. The standard service time at each counter ranges from
5 to 12 minutes, with the corresponding probabilities shown in Table 1.2. However, due to a
change in human resources, the second counter requires 10% more time than the standard
service time. When a customer arrives, they join the queue at the counter with fewer people.
If both queues are of equal length, the customer chooses a counter randomly. The objective
is to analyze the system through a simulation of the arrival and service of 30 customers and
answer the following questions.

Find out
a. The average waiting time for a customer
b. The probability that a customer has to wait in the queue
c. The proportion of idle time of the server
d. The average service time
e. The average time between arrivals
f. The average waiting time of those who wait
g. The average time a customer spends in the system

2. An inventory stores only one product. The maximum inventory level that can be kept in this
inventory is 100 units. The storekeeper checks and reviews the inventory every Saturday.
After each review, the storekeeper places an order of the product to raise the inventory level
to the maximum. The problem is to estimate the average beginning and ending units in
inventory and the number of days when a shortage condition existed for the next 30 days. If
a shortage condition exists, it must be addressed in the coming days. The distribution of the
number of units demanded per day is shown in Table 2.1. Lead time is a random variable
shown in Table 2.2. Assume that the orders are placed at the close of business. Also, assume
that the first day of the simulation is Sunday.

Time (Minutes) Probability Time (Minutes) Probability
10 0.10 1 0.20
15 0.18 2 0.40
20 0.30 3 0.30

3. Simulate the same reliability problem as given in your lab sheet. However, for the different
replacement policies, use the same bearing life numbers rather than generating separate
bearing lives for each policy. Use the probability distribution given in the lab sheet and
simulate the problem for 50,000 hours.

4. Simulate and analyze the Newspaper Seller’s Problem given in your lab sheet.
