CHAPTER 3
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This section discussed the methods employed to carry out the desired
objectives or agendas of this research. It includes discussions on research
design, environment, respondents, instrument, data gathering procedure,
statistical treatment, and scoring procedure.
DESIGN
This study utilized a quantitative method utilizing a correlational
research design. This sought to ascertain relationships between two or more
variables. Simply put, it examines whether an increase or decrease in one
variable corresponds to an increase or decrease in another. Correlational
study employ for examining the relationship between two or more variables.
ENVIRONMENT
The locale of this study is barangay Tapon, Dumanjug, Cebu studying
the impact of public crime on public safety and community well-being . The
island of Cebu, which is home to DepEd Cebu Province, is located in the
Central Visayas Region.
FIGURE 2 . Location Map of the Study
Tapon is a barangay (village) in the Philippine province of Cebu,
specifically in the municipality of Dumanjug. Because of its location in the
southern region of Cebu, it’s a great place to start your exploration of
neighboring places like Argao and many places. As of the 2020 census, Tapon
had a population of 4,118 residents. Tapon, Dumanjug, Cebu, offers a
strategic location for exploring the southern part of the island. Its proximity
to Argao, Samboan, and other destinations makes it an ideal starting point
for adventurers and travelers seeking to experience the beauty and culture
of southern Cebu.
RESPONDENTS
The respondents of this research were composed of 100 people in
barangay tapon in Dumanjug, Cebu Province Stratified random sampling
technique was employed in this research. Stratified random sampling is a
statistical sampling technique in which the population was divided into
distinct groups or strata, and then a random sample is taken from each
stratum to ensure that all segments of the population are represented in the
sample. The choice of things in this case is totally determined by chance or
probability.
Table 1. Distribution of Respondents

Purok 1 25 25%
Purok 2 25 25%
Purok 4 25 25%
Total 100 100
The respondents in this research study were 100 residents in
barangay tapon . This research utilized a simple random sampling technique,
which is a method where people will be selected or included in the sample.
INSTRUMENT
The research tool utilized to gather information for this public safety and
crime study is presented in this chapter. The purpose of the tool is to collect
data from participants regarding their opinions, experiences, and attitudes
regarding public safety and crime in Barangay Tapon. The research
instrument used in this study is a self-administered questionnaire.
Data Gathering Procedure
This chapter outlines the procedures used to gather data for this study
on public crime and public safety in Barangay Tapon. The data gathering
procedure is designed to ensure that the data collected is accurate, reliable,
and relevant to the research questions.
Data Collection Instrument A self-administered questionnaire of 25
items and broken down into five sections—demographic data, impression of
public crime, experience with crime, public safety measures, and community
well-being—was the data collection tool utilized in this study.
Data Collection Procedure Questionnaire Preparation to make sure
the questionnaire is correct and pertinent to the study topics, the researcher
developed and examined it. To verify the validity and reliability of the
questionnaire, a small sample of respondents participated in a pilot study.
The community’s respondents were given the questionnaire, which they were
instructed to fill up and send back to the researcher. Two weeks were
allotted for data collection. A self-administered questionnaire was employed
in this study to collect data.
Population and Sample the population of this study is the
residents of Barangay Tapon. The sample size is 100 respondents, which is a
representative sample of the population.
Data Gathering Steps the researcher gave the responders an
introduction and outlined the goal of the study. Questionnaire distribution the
respondents were given the questionnaire, instructed to fill it out, and
instructed to send it back to the researcher. The questionnaire, which has 25
items broken down into five categories, was given to the respondents to fill
out: Section 1: Data on Demographics (5 elements) Section 2: Public Crime
Perception (5 items) Section 3: Crime Experience (5 items) Section 4: Safety
Procedures for the Public (5 things) Section 5: Well-being of the Community
(5 things) The completed questionnaires were to be returned to the
researcher by the respondents. The information was gathered from the
participants and entered into a database.
Data Quality Control pilot testing to verify the validity and reliability
of the questionnaire, a pilot test was conducted. To guarantee its accuracy
and completeness, the data was cleaned. Data verification to make sure the
information is correct and trustworthy, it was verified.
Data Analysis descriptive statistics including frequency, percentage,
mean, and standard deviation were used to examine the data. Additionally,
inferential statistics like regression analysis and correlation were used to
examine the data.
Data Presentation the data was presented in tables, figures, and
graphs. The data was also presented in a narrative format.
Limitations of the Study the tiny sample size and narrow study
topic are two of the study’s many shortcomings. Both the data collecting and
analysis methods used in the study have limitations.
Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient. It is used to evaluate the statistical
relationship or association between two continuous variables. It is regarded
as the finest way for figuring out the relationship between variables of
interest because it is based on the method of covariance. It gives information
about the size of the association or correlation and the direction of the link
(Statistics Solutions, 2021).
Formula
R= correlational coefficient
Xj = values of the x-variable in a sample.
X=mean of the values of the x-variable
Yi value of the x-variable in a sample
Y=mean of the values of the x-variable
Scoring procedure
The following numerical and descriptive ratings are employed to measure
the responses of the respondents.
Demographic Numerical Category Verbal
information Range Description
5 4.21-5.00 Very High The
respondents
have a very
high perception
of public crime
and public
safety.
4 3.41-4.20 High The
respondents
have a high
perception of
public crime and
public safety.
3 2.61-3.40 Moderate The
respondents
have a
moderate
perception of
public crime and
public safety.
2 1.81-2.60 Low The

r-Interpretation
r- is a correlation coefficient that measures the strength of the relationship
between two variables.
