Energy is needed in our daily lives to produce electricity, heat homes, and run factories. Different
types of energy are used around the world, and they are divided into renewable and non-renewable
energies.
Non-renewable energies such as oil, gas, and coal are taken from the earth. These resources are
formed over millions of years, but they are used up very quickly. When fossil fuels are burned,
harmful gases are released into the air, and pollution is increased. As a result, the environment is
damaged and climate change is caused.
On the other hand, renewable energies come from natural sources such as the sun, wind, and water.
Solar energy is produced by sunlight, and wind energy is generated by moving air. These sources
are not exhausted and can be used again and again. In addition, less pollution is created when
renewable energy is used.
Today, renewable energy is encouraged by many governments, and new technologies are developed
to protect the planet. If more renewable energy is used, natural resources will be saved for future
generations. Adapted from: British Council – Energy and the Environment
