Type of Magnets
Type of Magnets
I. Define the following: (Copy it in the class work)
1) Magnetism: Property of magnet to attract certain substances such as iron.
2) Magnetic field: The field around the magnet where its influence can be felt.
3) Electromagnet: A soft iron bar which behaves as a magnet when current is
passes through a coil wound over it.
4) Magnetic induction: It is the process of magnetizing a substance by simply
bringing a magnet close to it, so that magnetism gets induced.
II. Answer the following:
1) State the properties of a magnet?
Answer: The following are the properties of a magnet:
i. Magnets attract magnetic substances.
ii. Like poles repel.
iii. Unlike poles attract.
iv. Directive property: When a magnet is freely suspended it aligns
itself North-South direction.
v. Poles of magnet always exist in pairs.
vi. The strength of a magnet is strongest at the two ends (poles) and
weak at its centre.
2) Name the methods used for magnetizing an iron piece?
Answer: The methods used of magnetizing an iron piece are:
i. Single touch method.
ii. Double touch method.
iii. Magnetic Induction.
iv. Electrical method.
3) What are the ways in which a magnet can be demagnetized?
Answer:
i. By hammering.
ii. By heating the magnet to a high temperature.
iii. By rough handling.
iv. By dropping the magnet on the floor a number of times.
4) Distinguish between Natural magnet and artificial magnet? (Copy it in the
class work)
Natural Magnet Artificial magnet
1. They occur naturally. 1. They are man-made.
2. They are brittle. 2. They are strong.
3. They are irregular in 3. They are regular in
shape. shape.
4. They have weak 4. They have strong
magnetism. magnetism.
5) Where are south and north poles of earth’s magnet?
Answer: Earth’s magnetic south- pole is near the geographic north-pole and
north-pole of earth’s magnet is near geographic south-pole.
6) Where are the poles of a circular magnet? How you will find this?
Answer: In Circular magnets its interior and exterior parts acts like different
poles.
To find the nature of the poles, suspend circular magnet with a piece of
thread. Bring another magnet near it, one surface of circular magnet is
attracted but another surface is repelled by the same pole of the other
magnet.
Circular magnet
7) Why is compass needle kept in a closed vessel?
Answer: compass needle is a small and thin magnet used to find the direction.
If it is kept in open, it may deflect in any direction due to pressure exerted by
air.
III. Give reason.
1) A freely suspended magnet aligns itself along earth’s geographical north-
south direction. (Copy it in the class work)
Answer: It is because the earth itself behaves as a huge magnet with its
magnetic North pole at the geographic South Pole and magnetic South Pole at
the geographic North Pole. There will be force of attraction between magnetic
North pole and geographic South Pole and vice –versa.
2) Repulsion is the sure test of magnetism. (Copy it in the class work)
Answer: Magnetic attraction is experienced by both magnets and magnetic
substances but repulsion is experienced only between the two magnets. Hence
repulsion is the sure test of magnetism.
3) It is advised to keep magnets away from television, mobiles, CD and
computers explain why?
Answer: It is because these devices are made up of magnetic materials and
magnets, by bringing magnet close to it will spoil the working of device.
4) Why are artificial magnets preferred over the natural magnets?
Answer: It is because natural magnets are weak and irregular in shape.
