5.1.2 Procedure:
Insulation resistance test has to be carried out for checking the healthiness of the Insulation. A 5 KV
Megger is used for testing the insulation between Primary terminal and earth. Same test is repeated
between primary and secondary windings.
A 5KV Megger is used for testing the insulation b/w Primary Terminal & Earth & a 500 V Megger is
used for testing Insulation between secondary and earth. If CT has more than one secondary
windings, then insulation is measured between secondary windings also.
This is the simplest of the tests. After the required connections are made, you apply the test voltage
for a period of one min. (The one-min interval is an industry practice that allows everyone to take the
reading at the same time. In this way, comparison of readings will be of value because, although
taken by different people, the test methods are consistent). As current decreases, resistance always
increases according to ohms law. Also, during this period insulation doesn’t decreases. If so happens,
that means insulation detoriates & the equipment is faulty. Also during this test the ambient temp.
should always be noted down since the reading varies with these ambient temperatures.

5.2.2 Procedure:
Each current transformer must be subjected to polarity test to prove that the primary (P1 and P2)
and secondary (S1 and S2) terminals are correctly identified. For this test a moving coil centre zero dc
milli-ammeter type instrument is connected across the secondary winding, with the meter positive
terminal coupled to P1. When the battery is switched on, the meter should flick in the positive
direction .The meter will flick negatively when the switch is opened.
Polarity check is necessary to see the relative polarity of the primary and secondary terminals when
terminals are not marked or to establish the correctness of the marking if already marked. In other
words the polarity checking consists actually in making sure that the terminals P1 & P2 corresponds
to terminals S1 & S2 resp. or not. If this doesn’t happens the relay can mal-operate.
The dc source, a dry cell or storage battery of 1.5-6V is connected in series with the primary winding
of the CT through switch. The positive pole of the battery is connected to the beginning of the
primary winding (P1) and the negative pole to the end of the primary (P2).
When the battery is switched on temporarily i.e circuit is closed then the pointer of the meter
deflects to the right & when the switch is opened then the meter deflects to its left. Thus it’s a sign of
like polarity.
N.B.:- This test when done for Turret Mounted CT, the testing should be done before mounting of the
bushing

5.3 Winding Resistance Test
5.3.1 Circuit Diagram:
5.3.2 Procedure:
Resistance measurement is done by Ohms Law Method. DC supply is provided to the secondary
winding and the corresponding voltage and current is measured. Then with the help of ohms law the
necessary resistance of the CT is found out (R=V/I)
It should be noted that DC voltage shouldn’t be applied for a long time since it may saturate the core.
Thus it should be applied for as minimum time as possible

5.4.2 Procedure:
Finally a ratio check has to be carried out. It is customary to conduct this in conjunction with the
primary injection tests mentioned later. Current is passed through the primary circuit with the help
of a primary injection kit. Since the resistance is low we have to start with low voltage. Thus Variac is
used for controlling the voltage. Then the current passes through the primary loading transformer
which may be of few amps rating. The primary current injected shall be of approx 100% or nearest
possible of the rated current. The secondary current may be high (a few 100amps approx). Current
should be measured at the loading T/F output or from primary of the CT to be tested. Preferably, the
secondary current measurement should be done at the control & relay panel end so as to check the
correctness of the CT path from CTJB to CRP

5.5.2 Procedure:
The magnetizing curve of each CT is checked by keeping the primary side of the CT open & energizing
the secondary side of the CT by AC mains voltage. The test result when plotted resembles a B-H curve
but represents the properties of the CT as a whole rather than just the properties of the core
materials.
A magnetization test is a convenient method for identification of different CTs which will have
differing knee points. The curve showing the voltage across the terminals of the secondary in a CT as
a function of current in the winding, known as Magnetization characteristics is therefore of prime
importance. The point at which the Current Transformer begins to saturate is known as Knee point
voltage. Magnetizing test up to knee point is a must. It should be ensured that the applied voltage is
slowly reduced to zero after reaching the knee point. This is to avoid high rate of change of flux
causing high induced voltage damaging secondary insulation.
Voltage is applied secondary terminal from zero level to certain level (name plate mentioned)
And corresponding milli amps current measured by milli ammeter and all reading measurement
noted and recorded on site register / test report.
