PROBLEM 4: DETERMINING AREA OF A RECTILINEAR FIELD BY TAPE

OBJECTIVES:
1. To determine the area of a parcel of land using the tape.
2. To let the student learn the different practical methods of constructing offset using taping
equipment only.

INSTRUMENTS:
1. Steel Tape
2. Marking Pins
3. Range Poles

PROCEDURE:
1. Establish the corners of the assigned fields into convenient numbers of corners.
2. Subdivide the given polygon into three convenient triangles.
3. Select the base for each corresponding triangle.
4. Construct altitude for each triangle by any convenient method.
5. Measure the base and altitude of each triangle and determine the area.
6. Compute the total area of the pentagon by adding the three areas determined.

3
7. To compute for the area of each triangle, multiply the base and the altitude and divide by
2 as shown by the formula below.

Base x Altitude
Area=
2
Total Area= A1 + A 2+ A 3

Three Methods of Constructing Altitude with Tape:

1. Swing Offset Method; (Good for Short Offset Only)

Given: Line MN and point P

Required: To construct PX perpendicular to MN

Procedure:

1. With point P as center select convenient lengths as radii.

2. With an observer behind M or N acting as a lineman, describe an arc aa
using point as a center. The observer observed if an arc aa is in contact or
tangent with line MN.
3. If not, continue describing an arc until it is in contact or tangent with the
line MN like cc and mark this as point X.

4
4. PX is the altitude if MN is the base and P is the vertex of the triangle.
Measure PX and determine the area of the triangle.

2. Chord Bisection Method:

Given: Line MN as the base and P as the vertex

Required: To erect KY perpendicular to MN and Parallel to PX

Procedure:

1. Point O is conveniently selected and with it as a pivot.

2. Select a convenient radius and describe an arc cutting MN at two points a
and b.
3. Determine the midpoint of ab and mark this as point Y.
4. Prolong YO to K and see if the perpendicular YK passes through point P.
5. If not, measure KP and move Y to X a distance equal to KP.
6. XP is the altitude.
7. Measure XP and compute the area of the triangle.

5
3. 3-4-5 Triangle Method:

Given: Line MN as base of triangle

Required: To erect KY perpendicular to MN and parallel to PX

Procedure:

1. A right triangle is formed by making the: 0 and 4, 4 and 5, and 10 and 11

meters mark coincide allowing one (1) meter long looping.
2. The right angle corner is placed over a point Y on base MN. There are three
members of the survey party to handle the right triangle, one at each corner of
the right triangle.
3. A lineman behind M or N guides the placing of one side to be collinear with
the base MN, with hypotenuse and the other side slackened during the proper
rotation of the right triangle.
4. Equal tension is applied to make the right triangle rigid, and a marking pin is
set on the corner end of the perpendicular side.
5. The perpendicular is prolonged to see if it passes through vertex P of the
triangle MPN.

6
6. If not, KP is measured and the perpendicular is moved to pass through P by
moving Y to X a distance equal to KP. Now, MN and PX may be measured,
and the area of triangle MPN may be computed.

Hints and Precaution:

1. When dragging the tape do not force if there is resistance. Avoid kinks of the
tapes if they are dragged along the line.
2. Wipe off the tape dry and oil properly after using and putting it away for
safekeeping.
