Research Paper Proposal: Public Trust in Policing

My proposal focuses on public trust in policing in the criminology field. As we all know

Policing is meant to protect communities and maintain public safety, unfortunately this is

not always the case in a lot of neighborhoods. Trust is an important part of effective

policing, building that relationship with the public is important, but when trust is not

there, everyone suffers. In my opinion the main issue is that many people feel that police

practices are unfair or lack accountability, meaning that cops can most of the time get

away with a lot of the time. Events in the past have and still to do this day cause a big

conflict and a big trust issue relationship between the two, especially now with ICE.

When trust decreases, people are less willing to report things caused by fear. I am

interested in this topic because I am interested in criminal justice and a future career in

law enforcement as I myself am on the path to becoming a Sheriff in either Illinois or

Florida. I want to better understand both the strengths and weaknesses of the system.

Looking at this issue through a critical POV allows me to think about how power,

fairness affect people's experiences with police. One argument this paper will explore is

that accountability and transparency are necessary to build trust between police and

communities and not trust them but everyone in this world. This topic matters because

trust is essential for policing to work effectively. Strong relationships between police and
communities can lead to safer neighborhoods and better outcomes for everyone. For these

reasons, public trust in policing is an important issue that deserves further research.
