Box Gutter Design Checklist (Based on VBA RP-02)

· Minimum Sole Widths:


- Domestic: · 200mm
- Commercial: · 300mm

· Flow Capacity:
- 200mm sole width supports up to 10.5 L/s

· Gutter Grades:
- Between 1:200 and 1:40

· Sump Requirements:
- High-capacity overflow: · 150mm depth, · 600mm length
- Side overflow: · 400mm length

· Rainhead Design:
- Must be open above overflow weir
- No inverted pops or vertical chutes

· Outlet Position:
- Must be below the sole of the sump or rainhead

· Lap Joints:
- Minimum 25mm overlap
- Sealed and fastened in direction of fall

· Support Systems:
- Continuous: Full-length support
- Discontinuous: Brackets · 750mm apart (only for gutters < 450mm wide)

· Overflow Provisions:
- Rainhead: Weir 25mm below gutter sole, full width, open front
- Sump: Side overflow to atmosphere, high-capacity overflow per AS/NZS 3500.3

· Expansion Provisions:
- Required if fixed points exceed 6m
- Refer to AS/NZS 3500.3 Clause 4.3

· Performance Solutions:
- Required for non-DtS designs
- Collaboration between designers, surveyors, and plumbers is essential

· Common Defects:
- Inadequate sole width or grade
- Blocked or undersized overflow outlets
- Incorrect rainhead or sump configuration
- Lack of expansion joints
- Poor sealing of lap joints
- Unsupported gutter spans
