NARRATION

After reading the anecdote Horegallu, you realise that you were also a
horegallu in some way. Narrate the incident in which you have become the
horegallu of another person.
One day, my friend was feeling very sad because he failed an important
exam. He was worried about his future and did not want to talk to
anyone. I sat with him and listened to everything he wanted to say. I
did not give any advice or judge him. I just let him share his feelings.
After some time, he felt much better and even smiled a little. He
thanked me for listening. At that moment, I realized that I had become
a horegallu for him, just like the stone bench in the story.
NARRATION

Nomita, in the story ‘Matchbox,’is often insulted and humiliated by

her husband, Ajit. Sometimes, he hurts
her feelings very much. Imagine that Nomita meets Ratna (the
character mentioned in ‘Horegallu’), and she
narrates the incidents of her life with Ajit to Ratna. Prepare the likely
narrative. [2021]
Ratna, my life with Ajit is full of insults and humiliations. He treats me as if I have
no mind of my own, no feelings that matter. He opens my letters without asking
me, as if my privacy means nothing. When I protest, he mocks me, saying that as
my husband, he has every right to do so.

If I get angry, he laughs and calls me childish. If I demand respect, he reminds me

that I am just a woman, living under his roof, dependent on him. He makes me
feel small, as if I am not important, as if my opinions have no value. Sometimes,
he speaks to me in a tone so cruel that it cuts deeper than any wound. He
belittles me in front of others, making jokes at my expense, knowing I won’t dare
to respond. If I try to defend myself, he gets even more irritated, as if I am foolish
to think I deserve to be heard.
Even in small things, he controls me. He decides what I should say,
what I should do, even how I should think. And if I ever express my
frustration, he turns it against me, saying I am overreacting,
ungrateful for the life he provides."

always expected to be quiet, unnoticed, until someone needs me. But
when I burn, when I finally express my anger, I am the one blamed for
it.

 Nomita
Nomita is the main female character in the story. She represents the struggles of women in a
patriarchal society.

anything wrong. She worries about him but knows he will always do his
duty. She dislikes hearing anything negative about Baldwin and always

by her family in difficult times.
Evie Baldwin

Evie is Baldwin’s daughter. She is young, emotional, and anxious about

her father’s situation. She asks many questions, trying to understand

Thursday
Today has been one of the most painful days of my life. I feel trapped,
unheard, and completely alone. No one seems to understand my
