2.4. Earthquake Loads

Earthquake Loads are applied as Building Code of Pakistan Seismic

Provisions 2007 and UBC-97.
The following parameters are used in design.
 Seismic Zone =4 (Ref. BCOP 2007)
 Soil Profile Type (Geotechnical) = SD (stiff soil profile)
 Seismic Source Type =A (Ref. Table 16-U)
 Special Moment Resisting Frame Interaction system as per UBC-
97.

2.5. Load Combinations

Load Combinations are applied as per UBC-97 with

necessary modifications.
The following effects have also been considered in load
combinations:
 Orthogonal effects have been incorporated in load combinations by
considering 100% EQ in one direction plus 30% EQ in perpendicular
direction as per UBC-97 (if required).
 Vertical Component of EQ has been incorporated by increasing and decreasing
the Dead Load by the factor 0.5CaI as per UBC-97.

1. STRUCTURAL SYSTEM AND ANALYSIS PROCEDURE

• The Structural System shall be Shear Wall– Special

Moment Resisting Frame Interaction system (SMRF)

Analysis was carried out using ETABS 16.1. The following

simplifyingassumptions were made for the Design:

• The slabs were modeled as rigid diaphragms for lateral

load analysis.
• Accidental Torsion Effects were included according to
the respective UBC provisions.

• Accidental eccentricity amplification was considered as

per UBC-97

• Cracked Section Properties were used as per ACI 318.

2. SUMMARY OF SUPER STRUCTUREANALYSIS

Model 1:

• Static Lateral load procedure is performed with accidental

eccentricity amplification to check the adequacy of the
structural members.
• Following property modifiers have been used for cracked
section analysis as per ACI 318.

o 0.7 for columns

o 0.7 for un-cracked shear walls

o 0.35 for beams

o 0.25 for slabs

• P-∆ effect: These effects are analyzed by calculating

primaryand secondary moments.

• Story Drifts: Inelastic Drifts have been analyzed in all

stories and all models according to UBC 1997 section
1630.9.2 and compared with allowable values described by
UBC-97 section 1630.10
3. FOUNDATION AND SLABS ANALYSIS & DESIGN

• Isolated foundation has been designed by using SAFE for

Shear Wall only, while for columns Isolated Foundation has
been designed by Using house developed excel sheets
against the Allowable Bearing Capacity Curves as
recommended by the Geotechnical report.

• The Foundation has been designed as Flexible.

• Slabs has been designed by using in house developed

excel sheets.
