Chapter 3

The research focuses on developing a device to accelerate the decomposition of paper using citric acid and heat lamps. A one-group posttest-only design will be employed, with data collected from 30 respondents including Grade 11 STEM students and science teachers. Statistical analysis will include frequency counts, percentages, and various tests to evaluate the device's effectiveness in producing organic fertilizer from decomposed paper.

CHAPTER III

Research Design

The researchers will use one-group posttest-only because the researchers will only

conduct one treatment and that treatment is when it’s about to undergo decomposition

using our machine and a certain amount of citric acid that will help the paper decompose

faster. Furthermore, the researchers will analyze the decomposed paper and check if its

harmful or non-harmful to the surrounding soil/ environment.

Materials and Specifications

Table 1: Materials and Specifications

Materials Specifications

Steel Frame For the case and housing of the device.

Holds the materials needed for the paper
waste to be decompose easily. Has size
of 35 cm by 25 cm.
Ceramic Heat Lamp Heat is needed in speeding up the
decomposition process. There will be 4
ceramic heat lamps to be needed in the
device. Each heat lamp provides 100
degrees Celsius – 200 degrees Celsius.
Ceramic fiber The temperature provided by the
heat lamps will be hold and
preserve by this material

Sprinklers Acid is needed to breakdown

components of paper easily. The
sprinklers will be responsible in
spraying the acid into the paper in
specified time laps.
Citric acid/ juices From citrus fruits. To fastén the
decomposition of paper

Research Method

The researchers will use experimental method in doing the study. This is the

accurate method for it allows the researcher to apply their scientific skills in assembling

the materials to make a device that allows paper to decompose easily. In this method, it

enables the researcher to know which substances are helpful in dealing with the

decomposition process of paper. The method also helps the researchers to understand

more of their study through critical observation on the variables used in the experiment.

Also, it will give the researchers overview about their recommendation that the end

product of decomposed paper can be use as an organic raw material in making fertilizer.

The method aims to understand, determine and evaluate the reliability and validity of the

research and how well the performance of the device in terms of decomposing a paper.

Respondent Of The Study

In this study, the respondents are the selected Grade 11 STEM students and some

science teachers of Siena College, Quezon City. Purposive sampling will be use to

determine the number of respondents of the study. Grade 11 STEM students and science

teachers of Siena College, Quezon City will be use as respondents for it obtains prior

knowledge about the purpose of the study. All in all, the researchers will choose a total

number of 30 respondents: 20 respondents from Grade 11 STEM students and 10

respondents from science teachers.

Instrument Of The Study

In this research study, the researchers will be using a survey questionnaire as their

instrument into this study, so that the researchers will enable to know if their product will

be efficient to their respondents. A survey questionnaire is a type of data gathering that is

being used to collect, analyze, evaluate and interpret the results. The survey questionnaire

will be validating first by the Capstone teacher of the researchers, which is Mr. Jay B.

Ongas and also by their paper adviser. The researchers will be focusing more if the

Cypparatus, their device can accelerate decomposing a paper and produce a fertilizer for

plants as their end product. The content of the questionnaire is the demographic profile of

the respondents wherein the name (optional), age and grade level/occupation; product

demo and product insights.

Data Collection

The researchers will be gathering data through the use of survey questionnaire so

that the researchers will be able to know if the device will be efficient and helpful to the

respondents, the researchers would also be able to read some comments from the

respondents due to the survey

Statistical Treatment of the study

To ensure systematic and objective presentation, analysis and interpretation of

research data, the following statistical tools and techniques will be applied: frequency

count, percentage, weighted average mean, two independent sample t-test, Pearson’s r

correlation and t-test for Pearson’s r correlation.

Frequency Count and Percentage will be used in presenting the profile of the

respondents, Percentage will be computed using this formula:

f
P= ( 100 )
n
Where:

P = Percentage

f = Frequency

N = Total Number of Respondents

To determine the respondent of this research study, Slovin’s formula will

be used to calculate the sample size (n) given the population size (N) and a

margin of error (e). It is computed as:

N
n= 2
1+ N ( e )

Where:

n = sample size

f = frequency

x = Likert scale (5, 4, 3 ,2 ,1)
