AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL.
Zanele Mkhatshwa is a third year Unisa student who is committed to pursuing a career
in education. She was born in Swaziland, then get married to a South African. She did
her matric at Roseburg High School in Durban. She is currently a facilitator at Reddam
School.
Zanele, at an early age, used to love accounting and she wanted to be a Bank Teller.
She always loved to go to school, love challenging questions, and collaborate with
other students. Zanele first worked at an early learning school, where she got inspired
and loved working with children and that is when she decided to pursue a career in
education. She loves teaching because it makes a difference in someone's life which
goes far beyond knowledge.

TEACHING STATEMENT
I believe that every child has an endless thirst for knowledge and unlimited potential. I
feel it is our responsibility as teachers to tap into that potential and help teach each
child HOW to think and not WHAT to think. We must provide an encouraging and
creative environment where children can develop a positive sense of self and the
desire to strive to be the best they can be. As teachers, we need to ensure that children
are developing in all aspects of their development and ensure that each child feels
valued and loved within the classroom environment. We nurture the whole child,
mentally, physically, socially, and emotionally. We have various roles and
responsibilities as leaders, managers, professionals, etc. These roles allow us to
create favourable conditions for teaching and learning, deal with the challenges
associated with the curriculum and learning process, and perform other administrative
tasks. Using the pedagogy method to teach the student both in theory and in practice,
builds on the student's previous learning and works to improve the student’s skills and
attitudes. Pedagogy helps students to understand the subject well and helps them
apply what they learn in their daily life outside the classroom.

B. MARKED ASSIGNMENTS (02)
Your reflections on the marked assignments, discussions, and interaction with the
learners and with the lecturer, and your overall experience of the online learning and
ISC3701 module. There must be evidence of reflection and growth in the Portfolio.
Reflection also means looking at your entire practice as a teacher. This is very
important if you are to develop holistically.
Assignment 02 – overview of the learning theory. It was all about demonstrating our
understanding of the theory, instructional model, and the role of an educator as a
designer of instruction. The lecture wanted to find out what we know and to what extent
we can apply our knowledge in an integrated way.
Question 1.3 was challenging but with the help of our lecture Dr. Mphoentle Modise
and discussions we had with ISC3701students in the group, the question was clarified,
and I was able to answer it correctly. For submission, we were given a link to access
the portal for submission of Assessment 2.
Through this assignment 02, I have learned the concepts related to teaching and the
diverse ways learners can learn the better way through learning theories.
Understanding learning theories help teachers connect with all types of students to
better understand their preferred learning style. Learning theories like constructivism
states that learners must be active in the construction of knowledge for learning to take
place. Cognitivism focuses on the way we manage information and retrieve it in our
brains. Behaviourism focuses on the idea that all behaviours are learned through
interaction with our respective environments
I also learned about different instructional models which provide us with an opportunity
to reflect and consider our role more critically and carefully. Question 1.4 wanted us
to differentiate between the ADDIE Model and the ID4T Instructional Model, which
differ by the number of steps or when each task takes place within a certain step. I
learned that even though are differ the actual task still happens, and the order remains
similar too.
I also learned about African-based teaching, which is about inclusive education and
connectivism. Understanding the African context is important since the challenges we
experience in the continent are often unique. Therefore, we need to deeply understand
the context of these issues before we can help find solutions. We can apply these
perspectives in our classroom by applying real-world contexts and case studies that
are relevant to our African problems to help students think deeply about them.
ISC3701 is an interesting and useful module, that focuses on instructing, educating,
training, coaching, teaching, facilitating, and developing the instructional aspects of
Education. I have learned multiple methods of instruction to teach learners of differing
ages, backgrounds, and ability levels will be explored and all levels of instruction. As
a teacher, I need to make informed educational and instructional decisions. I enjoyed
studying this module, it teaches me to think critically about my role in instructional
design, reflect on my lesson, and try new ideas.

C. FIVE PIECES OF WORK THAT HAVE NOT BEEN PREVIOUSLY GRADED:
Activity 1.6, no 4: How can you ensure that you offer a greater variety of teaching
methods once you are a teacher?
I will design lessons that address the needs of the students in my class. I will write a
lesson plan to ensure that the details of how the lesson will be conducted are well
thought out, with clear learning objectives and outcomes. Select appropriate content,
teaching and learning materials, and appropriate teaching methods and develop
lessons that use alternative communication methods. Use exemplary lesson materials
because they indicate what to expect during the course. Use previous knowledge,
which means that the teacher uses the students' existing understanding to help them
learn new things. Students integrate new knowledge by using previous knowledge and
understanding, activating prior knowledge increases understanding.
Activity 1.7, no 2: What aspects of African-based teaching can you integrate into
your teaching philosophy? How will this be of benefit to you, the learners, and your
school?
One of the aspects of African teaching that appeals to me is the African proverb
“Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu” which can be translated to mean that to be a person is
to recognize the humanity of others. It is from this proverb that the concept of Humanity
is developed. The Spirit of Humanity is being humane and ensuring that human dignity
is always at the core of your actions, thoughts, and actions when interacting with
others. Having Ubuntu shows care and concern for your neighbour. Collaborating,
teaching, and empowering with the skills to work effectively with others.
Activity 2.7: Log on to myUnisa to watch Flipped classroom 1 and Flipped classroom
2 under Additional Resources and write a reflection on what you have watched.
The Flipped Classroom is a new method of teaching where students first study the
topic by themselves, typically using video lessons on YouTube, and then apply the
knowledge by solving problems and doing practical work in class. Traditionally
students listen to lectures and take tests in class and read textbooks and work on
problems at home.
Activity 3.1: Comment on the third step in the ID4T model. Are you surprised that this
occurs so early in the instruction process? What are the advantages and
disadvantages of planning assessment before instruction?
ID4T Instructional Model analyse what learners already know and their learning
preferences. The comparison shows that the ID4T excludes analysis of needs. ID4T
or ‘Instructional Design for Teachers’ is a nine-step model allowing teachers to apply
creativity, assessment, revision, and instructional design all the time but with a specific
focus on the learners. − Learner-centered model. − Flexible - can be modified in any
step.
5
Activity 4:3: Write a set of questions you would suggest teachers ask themselves as
a way to reflect on their lesson design
After they have prepared the lesson (before they teach it)
1. What are aims and objectives of the lesson?
2. Does the lesson plan reflect the principles of learning and its practices?
3. Which teaching methods will be used for the lesson?
4. How can you accommodate different learning styles?
While they are teaching the lesson
5. How will you fully captivate learners and hold their interest throughout the lesson.
6. What basic concepts should learners know and be able to use in a long term?
7. What exactly do you want learners to understand? And what questions are they
expected to ask?
8. How do you make a connection of the learner’s prior learning with the new
content?
After they have taught the lesson
9. What skill will the leaners achieve during and after the lesson?
10. What are the strength and weaknesses of the lesson and how can improve?
11. What did I learn from this teaching experience that’ll assist me for future
reference?
12. Which problems occurred during my teaching lesson, and why?
13. Were the students involved? Was I clear in my presentation? How was the
pacing?

D. DESIGNING, PRESENTING, AND REFLECTING ON INSTRUCTION
1.1. Study the sample of the lesson plan above. Is this lesson plan complete?
Mention the five contents of a lesson plan required for effective and meaningful
teaching and learning experience in the classroom that are missing in the above
lesson plan, and why are the five contents important in your lesson plan?
No, the lesson plan is not completed.
The five contents of a lesson plan are missing in the above lesson plan.
(i) The lesson outcome
(ii) The lesson content
(iii) The lesson introduction
(iv) Teaching and Learning Phase
(v) Lesson closure
Why are the five contents you mentioned important in your lesson plan?
A Lesson outcome is very important in a lesson plan because it states what a
student must be able to do by the end of the lesson. Lesson content gives a
summary of the important things the students need to understand to be able to
achieve the lesson outcomes. It is very important to plan how to get learners’
attention, motivated, curious, and ready to learn. Depending on the teaching
strategy, the teaching and learning phase includes how to facilitate learning, keep
learners on task, manage the learning environment, gain feedback from the
learners, and keep them monitoring their learning. Think about what I will do and
what the learners will do at each point in the lesson. Lesson closure is a summary
of how I will bring the lesson to a logical conclusion at an appropriate time.

1.2. Design a lesson plan using the basic lesson plan format on page 27 of your
prescribed book. It should be based on one of the major subjects that you will
teach once you have completed your degree. Your lesson plan should be a
comprehensive guide with concise steps. It should be so clear that any other
person would be able to teach from it if you were absent.
A lesson plan.
Grade: 1 Subject: Mathematics
Lesson title: 12 (twelve) months of the year Date: 15/08/2022
Outcomes:
- Describe when something happens using language e.g. morning, afternoon,
night, early, late
- Knows the days of the week
- Knows months of the year
- Developing awareness of the time concept
Lesson content:
- Learners learn the days of the week through songs and rhymes.
- Birthdays are placed on the calendar.
- Learners learn the months of the year through songs and rhymes
Introduction:
Introduce a birthday chart, talk about birthdays, and Sing a birthday song.
Teacher activities Learner activities
- Ask learners whose birthday is this month? - Learners will answer the
question.
- Ask all learners to come and get their name - Learners will stick their names
tag on the birthday chart, on their
birthday and month.
- Teach learners a song of the month while - Learners will sing a song in
pointing at the month’s name action
Closure:
- Call in front of a learner whose birthday is today; we all sing a birthday song.
This will help learners to know when to sing a birthday song.
Learner assessment:
Ask each child when is his or her birthday
Ask them their age
Ask them how many months on a birthday chart
Which month has the most birthday learners
Lesson evaluation:
- Learners were able to stick their names on the birthday chart, on their birthday
and month.
- Point and name correctly the 12 months of the year in a calendar
- They know their ages

1.3. Why is it important to specify the methodology/pedagogy in a lesson plan?
It is important to specify methodology/pedagogy because it gives teachers insight
into best practices in the classroom setting. It allows them to understand how
different students learn so they can tailor their lessons to suit these needs. As a
result, this will improve the quality of their teaching as it will be well received by
the students. The methodology is a method of teaching. It is a way of dealing with
student learning. The methodology includes the principles and methods used by
teachers to enable student success in the classroom. Teachers guide students to
develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. To learn these skills, the
teacher helps the students to think about their processes, teaches them the ways
they can cope, and encourages them to try different ways. Pedagogy requires
meaningful classroom interactions between teachers and students. The goal is to
help students build on prior learning and develop skills and attitudes. Pedagogy
allows students to define learning in terms of how it relates to their social,
economic, and physical lives.
1.4. Problems are likely to occur during teaching and learning if a lesson was poorly
planned
• Waste of time, effort, and money for all concerned because no valuable learning
takes place.
• Teachers are likely to miss important information they wanted to cover and forget
the resources they needed.
• You may end up not knowing your students well, not being prepared to answer
questions,
• missing important factors that could become essential to students’ understanding
of new concepts.
• Poor or reduced learning occurs.
• Frustration of teachers and students due to poor teaching methods and limited
learning taking place.
• Poor communication between teachers and students in previous or subsequent
lessons.
E. CONCLUSION
The portfolio is based on the importance and value of instructions. The way questions
were asked in this portfolio, examined how much we have learned especially the
various aspects of teaching and how much we understand instructional design as one
of our responsibilities as teachers. The various instruction models and theories provide
us with an opportunity to reflect and gain practice in writing out instructional lesson
plans more confidently. Instructional Studies in Context is an interesting and useful
module that explores the integrated nature of teaching, learning, and instruction.

Evidence of application in classrooms
Choose a topic, for example, Coronavirus. Ask learners to discuss the topic. I would
pair the learners and ask them to discuss the topic. They must spend a minute each
explaining what they think they know about the topic. They are free to explain where
they learned that information. During these quick conversations, I would be walking
around the classroom, watching, and listening to them. By doing that I will be able to
see how much knowledge they have about the topic, who has prior knowledge of the
topic, and who does not. And then, I will use one learner to demonstrate how the
virus spreads on people and surfaces by using glitter.
Evidence of co-creating of knowledge during your journey in ISC3701
We are a group of 5 (five) ISCE3701 students. We meet only on Mondays and
Saturdays. We have goals and expectations. Everyone is involved and active, which
improves our understanding of the module. We do research, collaborative papers,
and discussion group. We share strengths and develop weaker skills, and
interpersonal skills. We learn to deal with conflict.
